The Uses and Abuses of History
The Uses and Abuses of History | Margaret MacMillan
4 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
The past is capricious enough to support every stance - no matter how questionable. In 2002, the Bush administration decided that dealing with Saddam Hussein was like appeasing Hitler or Mussolini, and promptly invaded Iraq. Were they wrong to look to history for guidance? No; their mistake was to exaggerate one of its lessons while suppressing others of equal importance. History is often hijacked through suppression, manipulation, and, sometimes, even outright deception. MacMillan's book is packed full of examples of the abuses of history. In response, she urges us to treat the past with care and respect.

Pickpick

A short, accessible introduction to the importance of studying history with the vigour it deserves.

The way we view history can affect the way we see ourselves as individuals (thanks, @batsy ) and as nations, and this sense of identity can shape our future actions for good or ill.

Margaret Macmillan has mastered accurate, clear, fascinating history writing. This one was written 10 years ago, so is appropriately dated in some ways.

JazzFeathers I think history is one of the most powerful tools we have to create a better world. Pity so many people seem to disregard it 😟 7y

“Examining the past honestly, whether it is painful for some people or not, is the only way for societies to become mature and to build bridges to others.”

“It can be dangerous to question the stories people tell about themselves because so much of our identity is both shaped by and bound up with our history. That is why dealing with the past, in deciding on which version we want, or on what we want to remember and to forget, can become so politically charged.”

batsy So very true. Even on a micro scale within families, if someone's memory of something is contested, it can be like stepping into a landmine. Coz their version of things is deeply bound with how they see themselves... 7y
Libby1 I agree completely, @batsy . This book mentions that idea, too 7y
