This has rave reviews on Goodreads but I didn't care for it. All the characters were pretentious, arrogant, and self absorbed: the aspect of deciphering the chess game was way too detailed and took up far too much of the story; and the ultimate culprit (and the reasons behind this villain's killing spree) was unbelievable. Some of my complaints may be down to translation but I probably won't read more of this author just the same.

Our litsy bookclub is doing rereads this month, and I want to reread all of these and then some because narrowing things down is not a strength of mine 🤷🏻‍♀️📚

I love how books have certain songs that go along with them in my mind, whether because they're thematically or emotionally resonant in similar ways, or simply because the songs were on frequent rotation during the time I was reading the book. Anytime I hear "Andare" by Ludovico Einaudi, I think of reading The Flanders Panel over a decade ago. I've never had a place to document these connections between music and literature, so I'm starting here.

I'm re-reading The Flanders Panel. It's a mystery about a chess game in a painting, a 500 year old murder, an art restorer, and the murder of people in the art world connected to the painting. Translated from Spanish.
