Islands in the Stream
Islands in the Stream: A Novel | Ernest Hemingway
9 posts | 19 read | 14 to read
First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurera man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

A little #bookmail today. I haven‘t read this one before (I love the Vintage Classic covers, but I hate that I have to wait for them to ship from the UK via Book Depository). I‘m thinking of using this for #booked2022 nautical novel. It‘s this one or Rafael Sabatini‘s Captain Blood.

LeahBergen I haven‘t read this one but I heartily enjoyed Captain Blood! 3y
DGRachel @LeahBergen Clearly, Instagram agrees. 🤣🤣🏴‍☠️ 3y
LeahBergen Yep, I guess you noticed that I just voted. 😆😆 3y
DGRachel @LeahBergen the only person who voted for Hemingway is my co-worker who is the biggest literature snob I‘ve ever met. I mean, I love her, but…🤣🤣 3y

Pickpick

This book was published nine years after Hemingway's death. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, (who seems a lot like Hemingway himself) from his experiences as an artist and an adventurer on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. I think this is Hemingway is at his best in this beautiful tale.

I read the book last month. For me, it was not up to my very high expectations. I find the book boring in the early pages and almost gave up. But because it was Hemingway's, I pushed on and finished it. This book did not ruin Hemingway for me. It actually made me curiouser to read his other works.
