I am continually reading books by women of the Middle East. Why? Because they are the ultimate survivors. Honestly, they've been dealt a bad hand and the courage to speak out about it is impressive and enlightening. They are usually very strong and powerful personalities capable of so much yet living in societies that mire them.

Shirin Enadi is a human rights activist from Tehran. She was the first Iranian woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, and this is her memoir. It is a beautiful story of her faith, her family, her desire for a quiet traditional life, and her intense love for her country, which makes the disappointment in aspects of the government so much more acute. #booksbymuslimwomen #readingwomenmonth #resistance #junetunz

A recent non-fiction read with #flowersonthecover. Also timely with the current (but for now suspended 😀) ban on Iranian immigrants. #feistyfeb #booksaboutlawyers

Blaire Also thought of language of flowers which was a book club favorite. 7y
RealLifeReading I've not heard of this book before and it sounds good! 7y
Blaire @RealLifeReading we read it for my feminist book club, and I learned so much about Iranian history. She works within the system to fight for people's rights even after being jailed. 7y

An eye-opening look into iran's history and one woman's fight to effect change from within the system. She uses Islamic law to defend women's rights despite her own belief in the separation of church and state. Jailed and threatened and yet maintaining her fight, eventually winning the nobel peace prize. She fights for an interpretation of Islam one in harmony with equality and democracy. #diversebooks #pocmemoir #nonfiction #morethan5000miles

Next up - my feminist book club's book. Looking forward to getting into this memoir about an Iranian attorney. Oh and my bookish resolutions - a whole bunch of challenges - bingo, atoz, book riot, and modern mrs Darcy. Also reading more Jeeves, children's literature and poetry. #bookishresolutions #womanofcolor #litsyatoz #lettere #readjanuary
