A Box of Bones
A Box of Bones | Marina Cohen

Twelve-year-old Kallie despises nonsense. She believes theres a rational explanation for everything, despite the good-natured prodding of her Grandpa Jess, who takes her to frivolous wastes of time like their towns local Festival of Fools. There, Kallie meets a faceless man (must be some kind of mask) who gives her a strange wooden puzzle box (must be some kind of gimmick). Intrigued despite herself, Kallie sets to work on unlocking its secrets and...lets something out. From here Kallies life begins to entangle with another world, a world where Liah, a young bone carver, journeys with her master to sell wares to a wicked Queen. The sights, sounds, smells, and spells of Liahs world are beginning to leak into Kallies, and if Kallie cant decipher the meaning of her own story, the end might be far from happy.

I did not have fun with this one. ⭐️⭐️.
I was engaged with the first chapter or two but gosh darn it this was a slow book for me.
I didn‘t connect with the MC at all. She‘s a very analytical girl and her father rubbed me the wrong way. By the end you can understand why but I wasn‘t pleased.

Pickpick

Completed this whole book last night, it was such a great MG book. I enjoyed how the tale connected two stories being told. It‘s hard to explain but it was like a story within a story. It does have its sad parts and I got very worried over the grandpa. I actually enjoyed the characters, a fun read.

hummmmm. If this was an adult book, it would be solidly in horror. I wonder for MG.
