Good YA fantasy set in the desert where the water reservoir are running out. Main character is part of the lowest caste that were made into slaves because they were the traitors who tried to steal all the water, until she discovered forgotten and hidden magic. Now will she save the world or destroy all those who harmed her?

I was a little wary of this book at first. Thankfully, the story doesn‘t flinch from or romanticize the horrors of slavery. Jae is a fantastic protagonist, full of rage & righteousness. Elan‘s struggle with privilege & lies is a good character arc, though Shirrad‘s seems a bit implausibly easy. The plot was a bit loose & slower than expected, but the style & the characters made it an exciting read nonetheless. ★★★★☆.

*TW for sexual assault.

Eh. This book certainly isn't terrible, but it never grabbed me. It started slowly, it was hard to get invested in the characters, and I had some problems with the worldbuilding. But the world and magic are interesting and different, and I liked the ending.

I was going to take the picture with some of our celebratory New Year's sparkling peach grape juice, but apparently we drank it all! #NewYearsReadathon

My #LitsyAtoZ alphabet is halfway complete! And I've noticed how often some letters repeat in titles and last names; I could probably do a whole new set of 26 just with B, C, M and S. 😝

Laalaleighh How was gilded cage? 7y
BookFreakOut @Laalaleighh It felt slow for most of the book but the finale was very strong; it pulled all the threads together and I feel like the author finally hit her stride. There are lots of interesting political and personal plots simmering and I'll be back for bk 2 since I feel like the kinks have been worked out by the end. One annoying instalove and not enough of the cool "could be a villain" character, just FYI. 7y
Laalaleighh @BookFreakOut thanks! Good to know! Maybe I'll wait for book 2? 7y
BookFreakOut @Laalaleighh That could be a good plan, it's supposed to come out September 5 so that's not long to wait and see. 7y
Laalaleighh @BookFreakOut oh that's not too bad at all!! 7y

Think Ella Enchanted in the form of class slavery in a desert world. The Closest are cursed to obey all orders, answer all questions & only speak truth. When the reservoirs begin drying up Jae, a Closest, uncovers long lost magic. But when saving the world means keeping society's status quo, she's not eager to help. An angry, sometimes selfish heroine who struggles w/ mercy vs vengeance, her relationship with her brother drives the story. #24in48

BookFreakOut PS @Seekingtardis I finished another one! 😜 My husband says I need to stop reading before I fill up the house with plushies, but that's just ridiculous. 7y

I really liked this one! Didn't love it though. It was pretty slow but the world buildings and the characters were fantastic. I do wish there had been some romance though. That's what was lacking in this story for me. I'm hoping for some in the next book which I can't wait to read.
