Second of all, this book I‘m #currentlyreading is chock full of philosophical discussion/debate in the midst of a murder mystery/political upheaval situation & I 👏🏽 AM 👏🏽 1000 👏🏽 PERCENT 👏🏽 HERE 👏🏽 FOR 👏🏽 IT.

I‘m always impressed with stand-alones that also include a believable slow-burn romance, & this one is does it extremely well. The blossoming relationship between Casiopea & Hun-Kamé is perfectly paced alongside a dark, beautifully constructed fairytale plot involving gods, demons, & more. Even more impressive, the ending stayed true to the characters & the story, & left me feeling curiously satisfied and unsatisfied all at once. ★★★★☆.

First of all, the writing is damn good. A loving attention to craft + world building that‘s positively decadent. I did sometimes feel like the pacing was sacrificed for the setting. That could just be me though, since I‘m from the dominant culture being described in the story & therefore don‘t need detailed explanations of holiday rituals etc. A stunning, rich fairytale that centers women and explores the nuanced bonds of sisterhood. ★★★★☆.

Y‘all, I tried. But there is only one author who has successfully used incorrect spelling and bad grammar to narrate the story in order to get us inside a character‘s head. This was NOT IT. The lack of quotation marks, the mangling of simple words, etc. was completely maddening — even more so when the author started breaking her own “rules”. It constantly distracted me from the actual story — one that I might have liked, if it were told better.

Ugh why did no one TELL ME this book could be so utterly beautiful & heartbreaking?! While Kaz & Inej continued to be my fave, the rest of the ensemble had stories that definitely engrossed me, & the plot was utterly spell-binding. A beautifully written story about how monsters can be heroes too ♥️. ★★★★☆.

Still as riveting as the first time I read it! What I love most about this book is that Bardugo takes larger-than-life characters & makes them intimately human. They perform impossible feats while making you feel like they‘d easily hang out in your living room, too. Mix that with a fantastic heist plot, and this story remains impossible to put down! Now on to book two 😊. ★★★★☆.

Finished the rest of this series in a whirlwind over the weekend! It seriously got better & better with each book. While the plot got bogged down in the third book, with a lot of “let‘s sit around for several chapters & explain how the magic works,” the action in the other chapters kept me reading for more — especially Chelsie‘s story, since she is my forever favorite. If you want a hilarious, exciting feel-good fantasy, this one‘s for you! ★★★★☆.

That was really fun! A fantastic setting, a cool plot, & writing that made me laugh out loud from its wit makes for a charming read. The main characters were harder to grasp — especially Julius, who‘s main MO is to not have a personality in the first place, so you end up paying more attention to the outrageously, flamboyantly deadly side characters instead. Which isn‘t exactly a chore, since their antics had you gasping, laughing or both! ★★★★☆.

What a phenomenal follow-up! It was incredibly refreshing to see issues of post-colonization sovereignty & diaspora grappled with in an epic fantasy. An epic fantasy with heart-wrenching characters like the Kauls (especially Hilo 😭💔), & a stunning world like Kekon, no less. The plot moved a little fast, but all in all this is an absolutely gripping series with unforgettable characters & a world you‘ll never want to leave. ★★★★☆.

ExcUSE ME, what gave this book THE RIGHT to break me like this?!?! This is an incredible story — phenomenally complex characters, the most incredible setting, & a deadly plot. Y‘all know I ADORE stories about bloodthirsty politics. But while you might come for the murderous, magical setting, you stay for the family, & the unforgettable characters — fierce, sweet, and all the shades in between. I can‘t wait to see where this goes next! ★★★★★.

Meh. The plot was cute, but the characters were boring. The hero was consistently too good to be true, & it was hard to believe that the heroine went from a quiet, bookish doormat to intrepid investigator in the space of like, two weeks. Not to mention the manufactured misunderstanding that felt confusing at best. Overall, the writing remained good (if less funny than the others), but there was a lot of yawning interspersed with eye-rolling. ★★★☆☆

This one went in a different direction from the others, but that wasn‘t always a bad thing! I liked how flawed the 2 MCs were: selfish, vain, very full of it even as they were also honorable, clever, & occasionally sweet. The intrigue was darker, more serious, which was very enjoyable. Yet, the romance felt rushed — two seemingly cold-hearted, utterly cynical people are declaring marriage intentions after one kiss & some longing looks? Hmm. ★★★☆☆.

Letty might be my favorite heroine yet — her straightforwardness & “I don‘t have time for spy games” attitude make her a really great foil to all the intrigue around her. Geoff was sweet, though he felt a bit similar to previous heroes. I had to knock a star for the eye-roll-inducing way India was described in a moment at the end. It makes me a little wary for what the book that takes place in British-occupied India is gonna look like...😬. ★★★☆☆.

A follow-up as adorable as its prequel! Loved the dynamic between Miles & Henrietta. Their best-friends-turned-lovers chemistry danced on the page from the first. The rest of the plot — & the ultimate answer to the question it poses — was very obvious from the beginning, & I still felt like Eloise‘s random interludes were unnecessary, but such things are easy to forgive when there are great characters & hilarious writing! ★★★★☆. 3rd for #24in48.

I really enjoyed this rendition of one of my all time favorite books!! The narrator had a really soothing pitch and momentum that lulled me into the story. I wasn‘t a *big* fan of how pronounced he made Eilonwy‘s voice, but it didn‘t stop me from falling in love with her, and Taran, and Flam and Gurgi and all the rest all over again! 2nd for #24in48

This was an utterly charming, adorable book! Though random interludes into Eloise‘s life did nothing for the rest of the plot, & both she & Amy were rather naive beyond belief — I found myself rolling my eyes & yelling WELL DUH multiple times at their obtuseness. Still, despite all this, the writing was hilarious, the dialogue even more so, and the romance was totally swoony. A really fun start to the series! ★★★★☆. 1st for #24in48

Things were going fine (if a bit dully) up until a blatantly racist scene in which one of the grown ups earnestly teaches a group of children about “savages” and their “primitive” ways and FOR GODS SAKE WTAF. I get that it‘s a Peter Pan retelling but there is absolutely no good reason to include a scene like that. It amazes me how irresponsible people can be when they‘re writing for *children* 🤬🔥. Not quite 1st for #24in48

This is absolutely perfect if you‘re in the mood for a cute, witty read. Yes, the characters were cutouts from the quintessential contemporary romance, but the two leads were hilarious and full of chemistry.
