In this collection of essays Sebald addresses the German literary response (or lack thereof) to the destruction of the Second World War. In the title essay he explores the silence surrounding the devastating Allied bombing and unlocks the many reasons for this silence, shame, fatalism the real inability to remember, interrogate or adequately express memory š‘‡

Moray_Reads It is difficult, revelatory and important writing, not least because this final dubious chapter of the war is given little attention on the UK either. The other essays really require a deeper knowledge of German literature than I possess but the broad strokes of the legacy of the war in German writing is still fascinating even if some of the detail was lost on me 7y
