Oooft. A wish-fulfillment story of what would happen if an outcast, odd, obsessive priest (autobiographical!) was elected as pope. It sounds like a farce, but this is in all seriousness. A dense read with far too much ecclesiastical detail, I should have had more background knowledge of the period and the church. And yet George Arthur Rose is a mesmerizing character, his force of will and strength of conviction. It is a fabulous character study.

Oooft, I am not sure I can take a whole novel of intricate papel minutiae.

In episode 9, we read Hadrian the Seventh and talked about popes, WWI, and wish fulfillment. This is one eccentric book!
