The Song Of The Dodo
The Song Of The Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions | David Quammen
5 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
Why have island ecosystems always suffered such high rates of extinction? In our age, with all the world's landscapes, from Tasmania to the Amazon to Yellowstone, now being carved into island-like fragments by human activity, the implications of this question are more urgent than ever. Over the past eight years, David Quammen has followed the threads of island biogeography on a globe-encircling journey of discovery.

I tend to read science, all kinds, when I read nonfiction. Tagged a book that I hope to fit in for #ReadingAfrica2022.

Science fascinates me. I think the average person has a very bad understanding of what science is and how much it knows. I know I do. Science does not have the best Chief Communications Officer. 😄 And communicating complicated scientific concepts takes hella writing skills.

DrexEdit @ozma.of.oz David Quammen wrote another book I thought was really good. I read it a couple of years ago but it's the only reason I have understood COVID from a virus standpoint, how it works, why it mutates, where it might go next. 3y
LitStephanie Sometimes I get frustrated when trying to understand a science story in a newspaper and I realize the problem is that the reporter simply can't grasp the concept themselves and are doing the best they can with a degree in jornal 3y

LitStephanie Didn't mean to post that yet, silly tablet. . . degree in journalism. Then there is the problem of brilliant scientists who cannot write in simple layman's terms to save their lives. I have a lot 3y
LitStephanie appreciation for good science communicators! 3y
DrexEdit @LitStephanie Total respect for anyone who can write in such a way to make me understand complicated concepts! 3y

I'm thankful for these six books—and all the others I couldn't bring back with me—for getting me through my long, two-bus commute from Douglas to Cork to Blackrock and back. My bookmark was my bus pass. #BusEireann #FunFridayPhoto
