I used to be so self-conscious about going to a bar or restaurant, ordering a solitary beer and whipping out a book from one of my bottomless handbags. SO glad I've finally reached the stage where I couldn't give a damn anymore. Here's to the best company a girl could ask for!

emilyhaldi Love this book!! 6y
magictoyshop @emilyhaldi yes! It's actually really good and super funny! I'll never look at FB status updates in the same way again. Perrotta has a new fan in me. 6y

It's been YONKS since I've fired up this good ol app. 12 months what's up? So I changed jobs and got civilly wedded. That's right, folks. Your girl is married as heck! 💏 (Y'know, I haven't got the slightest clue who I'm talking to but I'm going to plow ahead anyway...)

Started on this powerful #blackauthor a week back. She was sittin' pretty on my shelf for months. Finally cracked that spine! Krrrrk! My first #MayaAngelou! Is good, baby. 💙

Friday night with some choice Indian classical music and this incredibly surprisingly good #spaceopera. Epic #scifi & my first by this author who I bought only because his last name is the same as one of my favourite composers! 😂

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Mega-Adrian Tchaikovsky fan here. I haven't read this one but his epic fantasy/steam series about races of people with insect powers is ridiculously good 7y
magictoyshop @TobeyTheScavengerMonk there seems to be a theme here: Children of Time is about races of insects with human powers. 😁 7y

Last year, I discovered Mary Oliver through a blog post on Brainpickings. Her poem, Wild Geese, was the first of hers I'd read. It offered me solace in a difficult time. Over these last months, I find myself returning to her words over and over. So I did the obvious thing. #bookmail #poetry

I was listening to a podcast this morning when I found out that the amazing #sciencefiction movie #arrival was adapted from this glorious #shortstory by Ted Chiang! Of course I had to read it immediately 💥💣💥

GatheringBooks one of my favourite short story collections - so cerebral, this one 7y
tournevis Not only is it Ted Chiang. It's one of his best!👍👍👍💕💕💕 7y
magictoyshop @tournevis @GatheringBooks it's the first short story of his that I've read, lucky me! 🤗 It's really good and quite unlike other sci-fi shorts I read in the past... something literary about it. And the movie was pretty faithful in its adaptation, too! 7y
tournevis I have not read anything by him that I didn't like. I also met him once (long story) and he is a wonderful person. 7y

Well. I want to like this book very badly. And, for the most part, I do. I think it's much better organized than Inheritance. There is a purposefulness (is that a word? hah) to the way the themes are explored. But I can't get over the way the word "Singapore" keeps appearing everywhere. On page 70 alone, it appears 5 times. It's reaaaaally bugging me. #singlit

Blackass: A Novel | A. Igoni Barrett
post image

For day 4 of #marchintoreading, I offer for your consideration "Blackass". Based on Kafka's The Metamorphosis, the protagonist in Blackass wakes up one morning in #Lagos to find himself transformed into a white man, with the exception of his ass, which remains black. What a premise, right? Imagine my disappointment when I realized the whole thing was about white privilege and nothing else. #didntlikeitstillfinished #blackauthors

magictoyshop I didn't have space to add that the female characters were poorly drawn as well. One was a Twitter-crazy airhead, another was a rich man's mistress and yet another was a pining mother. Gah. Why. 7y

Pickpick

all it took was a weekend of festivities to make me miss Day 3 of #marchintoreading -- but no more! My #recentnonfictionread was almost 2 years ago 😲 After calling it quits with my on-again-off-again ex, I bought this at the airport before hopping on a flight to Krabi, Thailand. Quite possibly the best airport read I've ever bought. Witty and illuminating, it taught me that having too many choices is as good as having none at all. Loved it!

Day 1 #marchintoreading #marchtbr Hope to complete Han Kang today. I'm really excited about Nizami--a classic 12th century tragic love story about the Romeo and Juliet of Iran.
