Golden Bowl (Revised)
Golden Bowl (Revised) | Henry Jr. James
12 posts | 17 read | 17 to read
A new edition of Henry James's searing study of marriage and Infidelity Set in England, "The Golden Bowl"is Henry James's highly charged exploration of adultery, jealousy, and possession that continues and challenges James's characteristic exploration of the battle between American innocence and European experience. Maggie Verver, a young American heiress, and her widowed father, Adam, lead a life of wealth and refinement in London. They are both getting married: Maggie to Prince Amerigo, an impoverished Italian aristocrat, and Adam to the beautiful but penniless Charlotte Stant. But both father and daughter are unaware that their new conquests share a secret - one for which all concerned must pay the price. This story completes what critics have called the "major phase" of James's career. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators."

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView Lovely prompts, really made me think
1. I do! Some writers do it better than others, of course
2.These two are among my favourites-both with fascinating antiheroines-the complicated, tormented Charlotte Stant, and femme fatale par excellence-Milady de Winter.

TheSpineView Great choices! Thanks for playing! 3y

By the end of the first page, I could tell that James liked to use 20 words (and as many commas) to say something that could be said in five. Red flag number one! I hoped it would improve but (spoiler alert) NOPE! I came to dread even picking up The Golden Bowl before I‘d reached the end of the first chapter. I finished it, with gritted teeth and LOTS of determination... Full review: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-golden-bowl-henry-james/

Well, after over a month I have to say that my latest #modernlibrarytop100 book was a resounding “meh.” I‘ve really enjoyed other books by Henry James but I guess late-period James is not my speed. If I‘m going to read 600 pages I would really prefer to know what‘s actually happened by the end. A book in which a father and daughter‘s spouses start an affair with one another should be a bit more fun than this.

A little blurb since today it‘s the birthday of Henry James .He was born in Greenwich Village so long ago it was an address of the well to do , pre bohemian.I remember loving the tagged book and also Princess Casamassima , I have many more to read , including Turn of the Screw which seems to be the one most people read or were assigned to read.

elkeOriginal Turn of the Screw is a trip! 7y

Almost painful to read, The Golden Bowl did pick up toward the last third of the book. I had a hard time loving the characters and wished they‘d all just come out and say what they‘re thinking!

It did have some very interesting symbolism with things seeming perfectly fine on the surface (the bowl), yet it was flawed underneath. It‘s difficult reading and you have to be patient.
