At Night We Walk in Circles
At Night We Walk in Circles: A Novel | Daniel Alarcon
NPR Best Books of 2013 BookPage Best Books of 2013 Bookriot Best Books of 2013 San Francisco Chronicle Favorite Books of 2013: Francisco Goldman Flavorwire 15 Favorite Novels of 2013 The breakout book from a prizewinning young writer: a breathtaking, suspenseful story of one mans obsessive search to find the truth of another mans downfall. Nelsons life is not turning out the way he hoped. His girlfriend is sleeping with another man, his brother has left their South American country, leaving Nelson to care for their widowed mother, and his acting career cant seem to get off the ground. That is, until he lands a starring role in a touring revival of The Idiot President, a legendary play by Nelsons hero, Henry Nunez, leader of the storied guerrilla theater troupe Diciembre. And thats when the real trouble begins. The tour takes Nelson out of the shelter of the city and across a landscape hes never seen, which still bears the scars of the civil war. With each performance, Nelson grows closer to his fellow actors, becoming hopelessly entangled in their complicated lives, until, during one memorable performance, a long-buried betrayal surfaces to force the troupe into chaos. Nelsons fate is slowly revealed through the investigation of the narrator, a young man obsessed with Nelsons storyand perhaps closer to it than he lets on. In sharp, vivid, and beautiful prose, Alarcn delivers a compulsively readable narrative and a provocative meditation on fate, identity, and the large consequences that can result from even our smallest choices.

Understated yet ominous, a slow burn of a book in which you know something horrible happens at the climax from the get-go. You're just waiting to see exactly what it will be and how it will play out. I am uncomfortable saying i enjoyed this book, more that i enjoyed the process of reading it. I don't know that i've read another book anything like it.

I decided to keep a book over at the beau‘s house to read on lazy evenings. This is the first one I‘m reading in this context! ❤️📚

Still digesting this #audiobook but I definitely enjoyed it and there was a moment, at least an hour in, when I became hooked and quite invested in "figuring it out." There is a fair amount of plot but this is really a character study and I super enjoyed it-so happy I found it under "latino voices" in hoopla :)

Guildedearlobe I love having access to Hoopla. I have this weird habit of buying a book then suddenly it‘s available on Hoopla or Overdrive or RBDIGITAL. 6y
Andrea4 @Guildedearlobe well, that's unfortunate! But, you're ahead of the curve! 6y

I have @Jabberwocky pick but haven't started it. @BookishTrish is still waiting on your pick because...slacking...but she should have it soon to start! I dont think its possible to stay right on track over the summer, right? 6y
