We Were Never Here
We Were Never Here | Jennifer Gilmore
8 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
In this exquisitely written and emotionally charged young adult debut, Jennifer Gilmore explores how sometimes the wounds you cant see are the most painful. Did you know your entire life can change in an instant? For sixteen-year-old Lizzie Stoller that moment is when she collapses out of the blue. The next thing she knows, shes in a hospital with an illness shes never heard of. But that isnt the only life-changing moment for Lizzie. The other is when Connor and his dog, Verlaine, walk into her hospital room. Lizzie has never connected with anyone the way she does with the handsome teenage volunteer. However, the more time she spends with him and the deeper in love she falls, the more she realizes that Connor has secrets and a deep pain of his own . . . and that while being with him has the power to make Lizzie forget about her illness, being with her might tear Connor apart.

Pickpick

One of the books I picked up at Dollar Tree. It was just what I needed after reading Lord of The Rings which is quite dense.
I didn't love main character Lizzie. She was kind of whiney to be honest, and I found her love interest to be hm, not great.
But over all it really wasn't bad. I'm making it a pick because I would have loved it as a teen.

This started off as a nuanced look at an acute flare-up of a painful GI disorder requiring hospitalization and surgery. The various emotions of anger, depression, and fear are well portrayed. First love in grim circumstances is handled adeptly. Then about half way through it loses its way and becomes a vague, meandering morass of sentimentality.

SW-T @Nebklvr 😳 Hope your next read is more consistent and less meandering. 5y
Nebklvr @SW-T It wasn‘t horrid. It was just disappointing. The writing at the beginning was intense and quite eloquent but then just lost the thread of the story. 5y

Here's a few for you that I simply don't remember buying. It's possible the first book is trying to tell me something. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ #DontRememberBuyingThis #AprilBookShowers

Centique Ohhhh! Midnight Riot is the US version of Rivers of London. The first book in the Peter Grant series - my absolute favourite series! It's so good. Upbeat, fun, policing in London with centuries old magic 👍👍 7y
writerlibrarian First time I see Rivers of London book cover with the US title. I have the British edition. Such a good series. 7y
Robothugs @writerlibrarian @Centique Ah, cool! I didn't know this. I'll keep it on my "soon" pile! 7y

I was interested because of the blurb but this book was such a disappointment. The characters are flat. Lizzie and Conner have no chemistry and I don't get how they fell in love. I didn't like how Conners depression was portrayed and how he got no help. The two things I did like was Lizzie didn't have the typical illness that most YA books do (cancer) and I like the music references. Kind of wish I could get my $20 back.

This book was just okay. It's a YA novel and at times the narrative voice was very teen-like and other times it was not at all teen-like. It just felt inconsistent.
