Walking with Abel
Walking with Abel: Journeys with the Nomads of the African Savannah | Anna Badkhen
8 posts | 3 read | 19 to read
In Walking With Abel, journalist Anna Badkhen joins a family of Fulani cowboys as they embark on their annual migration across the Savannah. Although their present is increasingly under threat from Islamic militants, climate change and urbanization, the Fulani are no strangers to uncertainty - brilliantly resourceful and resilient, they've contended with famines, droughts and wars for centuries. Dubbed 'Anna Ba' by the nomads, who embrace her as one of theirs, Badkhen narrates the Fulani's journeys with compassion and keen observation.

Redwritinghood I keep seeing “Say Nothing” on a lot of lists. I‘m about halfway through it right now and it‘s quite good. 5y
Suet624 @squirrelbrain I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. :) 5y
Suet624 @batsy So glad we're on the same wavelength. :) 5y
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen I always smile when I think of Library Book. It satisfied me in such a deep way. 😄 5y
Suet624 @AmyG Oh gosh, yes, please do. I read it and then listened to it. I'll be touching base with it again, I'm sure. 5y
Suet624 @Christine I'm so glad you liked those three. We are clearly sympatico! The tagged book is possibly an acquired taste but I think of it often. 5y
Suet624 @Cinfhen The tagged book is one to take your time with. It got under my skin and I felt I was wandering with the tribe. 5y
Suet624 @Redwritinghood I really, really liked Say Nothing and I talk about it all the time with anyone who will listen. :) 5y

Pickpick

Finished this a week ago and still feel the effects. Badkhen spends a year traveling with the Fulani and their herd of cattle as they wait for rain. Climate change, war planes overhead, traditions slowly being lost, all dropped into the text while you travel alongside the nomads and the author. The book is lyrical, dense, dusty and plodding. I must find more of her work. This book won‘t be for everyone, but I loved it.

SixteenthStreetBooks Thanks for recommending this Sue. I‘ll look for it. 6y

I‘m on page 32 and I‘ve had to look up almost 20 words. I didn‘t know I had such a limited vocabulary.

Cortg Good for you for looking up the words! I have to do that quite frequently! 6y
Suet624 @Cortg it‘s funny you mention that. I let the first few slide and then it became apparent I was in for a ride and better crack that dictionary wide open. 😀 6y
saresmoore I love it when a book makes me do this! I don‘t know how much I retain, but the thrill of possibility makes me happy. 6y

Suet624 @saresmoore yes, retention is definitely an issue, but wow, it‘s an eye opener. I wonder if she talks the way she writes. 6y
Cortg If she talks the way she writes, most of the population probably has no idea what she‘s talking about 🙄 6y
Suet624 @Cortg Hahaha. 6y
minkyb 😂 6y
Suet624 @minkyb it finally mellowed out a bit and I was able to close the dictionary. 😀 6y

Badkhen goes to live w/the Fulani people, a group of nomadic cattle herders that trek across Mali. It discusses their history & lifestyle, but it's also a profound look at cultural empathy. Badkhen builds friendships, learns their language & ways, & approaches their journey w/emotional intimacy. 🐂 #ReadWomen

Joanne1 Sounds fascinating. 9y
Well-ReadNeck Oooooh, adding to list! 9y
BookishFeminist @Joanne1 @Well-Read Neck It's super fascinating & eye opening! I learned so much about a culture I didn't even know existed. Enjoy, guys! 9y
Heyitzz_brooke Is it about a real culture or is it fake? Is it non-fiction or realistic fiction? 9y
BookishFeminist @Heyitzz_brooke It's nonfiction about a real culture--she lives among them for a while. 9y
