Some Trees
Some Trees: Poems | John Ashbery
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
John Ashberys first published book of poems, handpicked from the slush pile by none other than W. H. Auden Ashberys Some Trees narrowly beat out a manuscript by fellow New York poet Frank OHara to win the renowned Yale Series of Younger Poets prize in 1955after the book had been rejected in an early screening round. Competition judge W. H. Auden was perhaps the first to note, in his original preface to Some Trees, the meditative polyphony that decades of readers have come to identify as Ashberys unique style: If he is to be true to nature in this world, he must accept strange juxtapositions of imagery, singular associations of ideas. But not all is strange and associative here: Some Trees includes The Instruction Manual, one of Ashberys most conversational and perhaps most quoted poems, as well as a number of poems that display his casually masterful handling of such traditional forms as the sonnet, the pantoum, the Italian canzone, and even, with The Painter, the odd tricky sestina. Some Trees, an essential collection for Ashbery scholars and newbies alike, introduced one of postwar Americas most enduring and provocative poetic voices, by turns conversational, discordant, haunting, and wise.

Do you ever equate life's unexpected financial occurrences with how many books you could have bought? As in, "That $4,000 that we now have to spend on removing the uprooted tree in our backyard is now $4,000 that I can't spend on books."

JenniferJarrell Oh no. 😕 7y
ReadingEnvy Or on vacation!! 7y
LauraBeth Exactly @ReadingEnvy!! Vacation! 7y

LauraBeth @JenniferJarrell it's a travesty! 7y
Lindy Sorry about your tree. 🙁 7y
LauraBeth Thanks @Lindy - I probably deserve it since I sought out a house with mature trees. ☹️ 7y
Mimi28 That sucks! Sorry to hear that. That would be a lot of books! (((((( Hugs))))))) and It's not your fault 7y
Lindy @LauraBeth A house with mature trees is obviously the best kind of house. I hope the other trees will live longer than the one that went down. 7y
myellenbee Yikes! That would be a lot of books. But it looks like a Crepe Myrtle in the foreground so you are probably in the South so shade is much needed. Just think of all the books you will read in the shade of the other mature trees. They were a good call. 7y
Tamra Ugh, yes I do. 😒 7y
MicheleinPhilly 😬Ugh. I'd be out there with a chainsaw myself. Of course I'd probably cut off a hand and knock down the house. 7y
HKGirl Oh yes, I have thought that exact thing. Thankfully not with something as big as a tree needing cut down! (At least not yet) 7y
LauraBeth Oh I'm not afraid of a chainsaw @MicheleinPhilly! My cheapness had me trying to cut it myself but the tree was HUGE. I quickly realized I'd need a commercial chainsaw. In my next life, I hope to be either a bulldozer operator or a tree cutter 😬 7y
LauraBeth Thanks @Mimi28 😘😘 7y
MicheleinPhilly Just as long as you're not drinking wine. 7y
ValerieAndBooks Yikes! We had 6 trees removed last year so I feel your pain 💸💸💸!! And we have a few more that probably should be 😬 7y
Lreads Yes! I was just thinking about this last night! We're waiting on an estimate for some much needed landscape repair. I would rather use the money on getting rid of carpet inside if I can't use it on books. 7y
LauraBeth Thanks @lindy - I was sad to see this one go because it was a 100 foot hickory. She lived to be 100 7y
LauraBeth @myellenbee good eye - that's one of my crepe myrtles - she's literally a late bloomer - when all of the other crepes are flowering, she'll still be green and takes her sweet time. But you're right - much shade is needed here! ☀️☀️ 7y
LauraBeth @tamra just a fact of life I guess 😀 7y
Smangela Oy Vey! Not a cheap date - but important for your home! 7y
myellenbee I live in the south too with mature trees and crepe myrtles☺🌳 7y
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly right - no drinking of wine while operating machinery. I'm gonna die doing something stupid anyway - I can't speed up the process. But accidental death and dismemberment - I told the husband to get that additional coverage for me. He agreed 😂 7y
LauraBeth @ValerieAndBooks it's so expensive! We have a LOT more that need to go - I just don't want to put any more money towards it right now 😬 7y
LauraBeth @ReadsWithTea the only positive thing to this was that since the tree was way in the back and difficult to get to, they cleared a lot of brush from my property that I've been meaning to get to - but haven't because books...The husband was like, "go to Home Depot and get some pavers and mulch now that the area is cleared!" and I'm all - "maybe after I read some more..." 7y
MicheleinPhilly This year was the first time I opted in for all of the "supplemental" life insurance offerings when we made our selections. "I'm going to be 40! We need more insurance!" The insurance companies LOVE my neuroses. 7y
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly 40 is the age when you start to increase the life insurance ??. And the neurosis gets worse. The husband is having a severe reaction to poison ivy and while he's putting calamine on it, I'm silently thinking, "oh my God - I think it's flesh eating bacteria! It's probably eating his organs this very minute!" 7y
MicheleinPhilly That's us. My sister is a PA so we're always sending her photos of things and asking, "What is this? Is it a tumor???" and she's like, "That looks like a mosquito bite." 7y
Lreads I would go to Home Depot to get the mulch and pavers but also dawdle or sit in the car and read. I've "run" to the store but took my sweet time and not felt guilty at all!? 7y
OrangeMooseReads Yes. I recently had to have an $800 repair/fix to my car. $800 would have covered a whole lot from my TBB (to be bought) list. 7y
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly 😂😂😂😂 7y
LauraBeth @ReadsWithTea 😂😂 pavers and mulch seem like such a lot of work - I don't feel like committing to that right now - I do like your dawdle approach - that could buy me some time if he just knows we *have* the stuff sitting here 7y
LauraBeth @OrangeMooseReads car maintenance is the worst! Yesterday I was like, "my tires are shot - I should get new tires..." and then I'm like, "nah - that's a lot of money!" I talked myself out of it quickly. 7y
OrangeMooseReads @LauraBeth tires are crazy expensive 7y
