This is a much different book than Altered Carbon in terms of genre (this is more a straightforward military sci fi) but I still had a good time! The introduction of Martian archaeology was so interesting and I loved the extended world building, and I liked the dynamics between Kovac‘s crew. Some parts dragged but it was intriguing enough throughout, though the writing itself was sometimes a bit too vague and jumbled. 4/5⭐️, a solid book 2!

Book 2 in the Takeshi Kovacs series that started in Altered Carbon. This story is more a military sci-fi that the crime sci-fi of the previous book. It was an interesting story, but not quite as good as the first. And from what I can tell in the 1st three episodes of season 2 of Altered Carbon on Netflix, about the only thing they take from this book is characters and names.

Though the story wasn't as good as the first book, the world building is great and I enjoyed learning a bit more about the Martians. Book three is on my list!
