The Penguin History of New Zealand
The Penguin History of New Zealand | Michael King
4 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
New Zealand was the last country in the world to be discovered and settled by humankind. It was also the first to introduce full democracy. Between those events, and in the century that followed the franchise, the movements and the conflicts of human history have been played out more intensively and more rapidly in New Zealand than anywhere else on Earth. The Penguin History of New Zealand, a new book for a new century, tells that story in all its colour and drama. The narrative that emerges in an inclusive one about men and women, Maori and Pakeha. It shows that British motives in colonising New Zealand were essentially humane; and that Maori, far from being passive victims of a 'fatal impact', coped heroically with colonisation and survived by selectively accepting and adapting what Western technology and culture had to offer. This book, a triumphant fruit of careful research, wide reading and judicious assessment, was an unprecedented best-seller from the time of its first publication in 2003.

#FirstEverLitsyPost Thankfully I remembered my post so that I could find it without having to scroll, lol. I was introduced to Litsy by @StephTKO and, while it took me a couple months to really get it figured out, once I did, there was no turning back. I love it here. And thankfully, I've figured out how to properly edit a photo. 😂😂😂😂 #booktober

This is the peachiest book I own (lighting strategically used to make it more peachy than orange). #augustofbooks #augustphotochallenege #peachybook

ValerieAndBooks I see that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on your shelf actually has some peach color on the cover! 8y
MrBook Love this pic! 8y

Sometimes I participate in #TravelTuesday on Instagram. This is an indie bookshop in Auckland, New Zealand that my husband and I found when we were there in May. I loved it, except for the fact that books in NZ are expensive as heck. I ended up hanging out here three times in the three days we were in Auckland. I let Allen go hike up an active volcano alone so I could peruse their stacks 😂 we also found a cute used store in Queenstown.

MrBook 😂😂😂👍🏻 Love it! 8y
Soubhiville It's good to know book prices are high there- I'll pack extra when I go so I'm not tempted too much!!! 8y
Laalaleighh 😍😍😍 how expensive are we talking? 8y

Alisnazzy @Laalaleighh almost $10 more than their US counterparts 😕 8y
Alisnazzy @Soubhiville are you going to NZ?! 8y
Laalaleighh @Ambrosnazzy oh no! How do people over there deal!! I would be always broke!! 8y
Soubhiville @Ambrosnazzy someday! There are so many places I want to visit! But it's near the top of my list. 8y
Alisnazzy @Laalaleighh yep. I mean it was kind of a blessing in disguise because I only had a hiker's pack for my luggage and I was able to get away with waiting to the last two days we were in NZ to finally break down and spend the money. 8y
Alisnazzy @Soubhiville it's incredible. Photos could never do it justice. I have anxiety, especially when traveling, and by the end of a trip I'm usually ready to get back to my house, but not this trip. I wanted to stay/I'm ready to get back there in The next flight. 8y
Howseldomtheydo Great pic! I just followed you on Instagram. Lol 8y
Trav My husband-to-be is a kiwi so I totally understand your feels. Although, it's not much better here in Aus sometimes. 8y
Alisnazzy @Trav yeah but you guys have Tim Tams so you'll always be winning 😂 8y
Trav @Ambrosnazzy LOL I love how you know we have Tim Tams. They are the best! 8y
Alisnazzy @Trav they sold them in New Zealand and it was like a spiritual experience. They started selling the original, caramel, and dark here in the states but of course my favorites are the double coat and white. Dammit now I'm hungry lol 8y
Trav @Ambrosnazzy I completely understand re: spiritual experience. Have you done the thing where you bite a corner of the Tim Tam on opposite ends and then suck on one end with hot chocolate? It's an actual thing over here! Haha if your hankering for Tim Tam's ever gets out of hand let me know and I'll send you some of your favourites :) 8y
Alisnazzy @Trav oh. My. God. I am definitely going to have to try that! And thanks so much for the offer. You're too kind! 8y
Trav @Ambrosnazzy Yessss. You need to let me know how it goes! It's soooo good albeit the messiness. No probs, always happy to help out a fellow Tim Tam lover 👍🏻 8y
