Written at the end of the Bush Jr presidency, this couldn‘t be any more timely. How did this country founded on reason and logic descend into a mass hysteria of anti-intellectualism? It wasn‘t overnight. It took years of devaluing truth and elevating fiction for the purpose of commerce. Yes, if only reality entertained as much as reality tv, we‘d be living in a much different country.

Leniverse This is what turned me off the show. They were making it look like torture was necessary and useful, and made Amnesty look like complete tools for terrorists. 6y

"Even in the developing world, where I spend a lot of time doing my work, if you tell them you're from MIT and you tell them that you do science, it's a big deal. If I go to India, and I tell them I'm from MIT, it's a big deal. If I go to Thailand, it's a big deal. In Iowa, they could give a rat's ass. And that‘s a weird thing, that we're moving that way as a nation." --Kit Hodges

Slajaunie It may be weird but it is also unfortunate. The United States needs to improve education. We are head d down the wrong road. 6y

It was impolite to wonder why our parents had sent us all to college, and why generations of immigrants had sweated and bled so that their children could be educated, if not so that one day we would feel confident enough to look at a museum full of dinosaurs rigged to run six furlongs at Aqueduct and make the not unreasonable point that it was batshit crazy, and that anyone who believed this righteous hooey should be kept away from sharp objects.

Aimeesue Yep. Kurt Anderson's Fantasyland outlines that propensity as well, and shows how it was baked into America right from the beginning. Scary, bewildering stuff. 6y

Great #audiobook narrated by actor Bronson Pinchot. Saw a video game reminded me of it (Ark Survivor.) #Science knowledge is fading fast, with a return to believing the Earth is only 6000 years old, that man and #dinosaurs walked together. Pierce shows how an anti-science craze has swept America, with flat Earth #videos now viral on #Youtube. How will their #kids get #jobs in a high #tech future?
