This is hard to rate. I‘ll go with so-so because it was published in 1975 and I‘m certain new info has come out since. It‘s a pick for readability and bringing awareness to the importance of women in history which was beginning to develop at the time of publication. I was surprised to see on the back flap that it‘s geared towards younger readers, because attitudes towards sex during that time is discussed. But hey it was the 70s when written.

muscogulus Doesn‘t surprise me much that a ‘70s book for young readers would get into sex. This was the heyday of smug psychohistory and the Freudian analysis of dead people — and in general, as you hint at, it was possibly the most oversexed decade of the 20th century. 5y

ValerieAndBooks @muscogulus Very good points! I'm old enough to remember that era 😂 but young enough that I would have been the target audience when this came out. History is constantly being re-interpreted through the lens of various times, isn't it?! I wish the author had cited her sources, also 🙄 . 5y

muscogulus @ValerieAndBooks Minor point, but the swashy Bookman typeface on that cover brings back memories of childhood. ValerieAndBooks @muscogulus a good trip down memory lane there! All of my parents‘ Rod McKuen‘s poetry books had that type of font 😊. Book covers definitely do go through font trends — currently it‘s the hand-lettering all caps, which I hope will go away soon. 5y

Book mail from Thrift Books! Remember that copy of Founding Mothers (out of print) that had missing chapters? I tracked down another copy and now I can read what it has to say about Black and Native American women.

Also ordered Betsy Ross and a third book (on its way) to get free shipping 😊

Suet624 Glad you found a replacement book so you could read the missing info. Did you ever figure out why the other book had those particular pages missing? Did someone rip them out? 5y

ValerieAndBooks @Suet624 I think it was some sort of printer‘s error because that copy had a chapter repeated twice. And no signs of cuts or tears. (edited) 5y

muscogulus Re the missing pages, I have a copy of Jeremy Black‘s biography of George III (a 21st century book) with about 40 pp absent; it came from the press that way. 5y

muscogulus @ValerieAndBooks I skipped those pages and guessed. Thought of contacting the publisher but never got around to it. Bought it at a history lecture by the author. Good book with the memorable subtitle “America‘s Last King.” Influenced my improved opinion of George III, far from the tyrant he was said to be on our side of the big water. 5y

Ugh! The non-fiction book I‘m reading about women in the Revolutionary War era is missing pages 85-108 😡! It‘s out of print and one that I came across used. Debating whether I should find another copy online. It appears as if it was a binding error rather than removed pages. The missing section discusses Black and Native American women. If any of you have recommendations on other non-fic about women from this era, let me know!

Especially since those two chapters are important topics! And then later on I realized the book repeated the chapter on Loyalist women 😯. @Swe_Eva your idea is a good one and I may try! Ironically my copy was a library discard! 5y
