Eight Faces at Three
Eight Faces at Three | Craig Rice
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
The grand dame of mystery mixed with screwball comedy introduces her popular, sharp-witted Chicago lawyer/sleuth (Ed Gorman, Ellery Queen Awardwinning author). John J. Malone, defender of the guilty, is notorious for getting his culpable clients off. Its the innocent ones who are problems. Like Holly Inglehart, accused of piercing the black heart of her well-heeled and tyrannical aunt Alexandria with a lovely Florentine paper cutter. No one who knew the old battle-ax liked her, but Hollys prints were found on the murder weapon. Plus, she had a motive: She was about to be disinherited for marrying a common bandleader. With each new lurid headline, Hollys friends and supporters start to rally. Theres North Shore debutante Helene Brand; Hollys grooms press agent, Jake Justus; the madam of a local brothel, and Alexandrias hand-wringing servants. But not one of them can explain the queerest bent to the crime: At the time of the murder, every clock in the Inglehart mansion stopped dead. And thats only the first twist in a baffling case of aunty-cidebecause Alexandria wont be the last to die. Making his debut in this fun and funny novel, Craig Rices one-of-a-kind Chicago attorney is an inspired creation . . . an unapologetic champion of the defense bar . . . a defender of the guilty whose contempt for society outstrips his contempt for criminals (Jon L. Breen, Edgar Awardwinning author). Eight Faces at Three is the 1st book in the John J. Malone Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Here‘s a great link to the author and the book: https://crimereads.com/rediscovering-the-gin-soaked-screwball-mysteries-of-craig... In the meantime if you‘ve ever watched Nick and Nora and loved it, here‘s a great example of the peculiarly American louche, bantering, urban high styling mix of society and crime back in the golden age! Still hoping for an Asta to appear.

DivineDiana I do enjoy Nick & Nora! ❤️ 3y

Mehso-so

I finished this yesterday and honestly forced myself to finish. The story was okay but the enormous amount of typos in this book detracted from the story. There was a lot of witty banter between the main characters that I enjoyed, but I don't think I'd recommend this book to anyone ☺

My first official Litsy post. Still feeling my way around this app and trying to figure things out. In the meantime, I'm making progress reading 8 Faces At 3 by Craig Rice.
