Pastures of Heaven (Revised)
Pastures of Heaven (Revised) | John Steinbeck
9 posts | 16 read | 9 to read
John Steinbeck's beautifully rendered depictions of the small yet fateful moments that transform ordinary lives in these early stories introduce both the subjects and style of artistic expression that recur in the most important works of his career. Each of these self-contained stories is linked to the others by the presence of the Munroes, a family whose miguided behavior and lack of sensitivity precipitate disasters and tragedies, intellectual limitations, and emotional vulnerabilities that shape the characters' reactions and gradually erode the harmony and dreams that once formed the foundation of their community.

This collection of connected short stories set in the Salinas-Monterey area is an example of Steinbeck's realistic narrative style. The characters were relatable and likable. 4/5

Interconnected short stories set in an idyllic-seeming valley, with Steinbeck‘s signature insights into human nature, and observations of the natural world. I thoroughly enjoyed them. #authoramonth @Soubhiville

As always, John Steinbeck is a wonderful writer, and his descriptions of the setting and the characters are wonderful. He's one of my favorite authors. This is about several families who live in The Pastures of Heaven, a valley in California outside of Monterey, and how their lives affect one another.

Suet624 I‘m surprised I know nothing about this book. I‘ll have to check it out. 4y
BestDogDad One of my favorites, too. I have not read this one yet but I own it. 4y

Pickpick

I‘ve read a few books in which the main character of the book is the scenery. The Pastures of Heaven is definitely one of them. It‘s a collection of short stories, all interwoven, taking place in a beautiful valley near Salinas and Monterey, California, where Steinbeck called home. Land, it‘s such a mystery, especially the way we humans interact with it.
