First Light: The Centenary Collection | Geoffrey Wellum
6 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Two months before the outbreak of the Second World War, eighteen-year-old Geoffrey Wellum becomes a fighter pilot with the RAF . . . Desperate to get in the air, he makes it through basic training to become the youngest Spitfire pilot in the prestigious 92 Squadron. Thrust into combat almost immediately, Wellum finds himself flying several sorties a day, caught up in terrifying dogfights with German Me 109s. Over the coming months he and his fellow pilots play a crucial role in the Battle of Britain. But of the friends that take to the air alongside Wellum many never return.

Checked out the newest #Austin Texas bookstore: First Light Bookshop. Delightful! A great curated collection of books-bestsellers, classics, and a couple unique and unfamiliar books I had to bring home.

Soubhiville It‘s cool that it‘s a former post office! 1y

Fascinating memoir of one of youngest pilots in the Battle of Britain. Not a great pilot, but a reliable one, Wellum reflects the sad reality of the normal soldier - there is only a limited amount of courage,of fortitude. He started his career with three close friends - two of who were dead before training was over, the third within weeks of being assigned to a squadron. After two years of action you are no longer a useful aviator.
