Thin Ice: A Mystery
Thin Ice: A Mystery | Paige Shelton
11 posts | 8 read | 12 to read
First in a new series set in Alaska from beloved cozy author Paige Shelton, Thin Ice will chill your bones. Beth Rivers is on the run - she's doing the only thing she could think of to keep herself safe. Known to the world as thriller author Elizabeth Fairchild, she had become the subject of a fanatic's obsession. After being held in a van for three days by her kidnapper, Levi Brooks, Beth managed to escape, and until he is captured, she's got to get away. Cold and remote, Alaska seems tailormade for her to hideout. Beth's new home in Alaska is sparsely populated with people who all seem to be running or hiding from something, and though she accidentally booked a room at a halfway house, she feels safer than she's felt since Levi took her. That is, until she's told about a local death that's a suspected murder. Could the death of Linda Rafferty have anything to do with her horror at the hands of Levi Brooks? As Beth navigates her way through the wilds of her new home, her memories of her time in the van are coming back, replaying the terror and the fear--and threatening to keep her from healing, from reclaiming her old life again. Can she get back to normal, will she ever truly feel safe, and can she help solve the local mystery, if only so she doesn't have to think about her own?

#IdiomInsight

#OnThinIce is an idiom that describes when someone is doing something risky or dangerous & engaging in behavior that may cause them trouble. The phrases came into use in the 1800s & alludes to the fact that ice that is too thin to support someone‘s weight will break and cause the person to fall into the water.

This is book 1 in a favorite Alaska-set series where the MC, Beth, is often on thin ice. I just finished the ARC of book 5.

This was a solid start to a mystery series set in Alaska.

I really enjoyed the main character, Beth, and the trauma she's overcoming.

This was more straight-forward mystery and not much thriller. Not that that's a problem-it was nice reading a quiet mystery.

Definitely recommend if you like this genre.

It was a good week, last week. I read the two kids books on Sunday so I could get them back to the library. “A Blizzard of Polar Bears“ was finished and in time for the next one is the series to be coming my way via the library.

“Thin Ice“ is halfway read and entertaining. I've already get book 2 c/out.

“The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe“ was read 20+ years ago and I've felt the itch to delve into Narnia again.

Thriller writer Beth Rivers has run to small town Alaska after escaping her abductor who remains at large. Right as she arrives, a local citizen has been found dead and turns out her hotel is really something else. I really like this and my mom LOVED it, so much so that I‘m headed to the library in a few days to pick up the next installment to read to her. Thanks to @DebinHawaii for putting this series on my radar!

DebinHawaii Glad you & your mom enjoyed it! 🤗 I really like the series as a whole & the characters! 2y
Librariana Love to read that your momma loved it so much so that it has encouraged a trip to the library 😊 2y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana The pandemic has resulted in a new tradition for my mom and I. I read books to her over audio files, then text them to her to listen. So then we get to enjoy books together! I started it in fall of 2020 and we‘re still going. This one was the latest. I always know she‘s really digging a book when she wants me to send her more files each day, which was definitely the case with this one! 2y
squirrelbrain Love that you read books to your mom! ❤️ 2y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain It‘s been fun! We both really enjoy it. And it‘s helped us bond while we‘re so far apart. 2y

Finished this one from the library so I can read my #ARC of the 2nd book that published yesterday. I love books set in Alaska & got sucked right into this one. Beth, a well-known thriller author barely escaped a stalker who kidnapped her for 3 days. She‘s hiding out in remote town in Alaska with only the sheriff aware of who she is, a brain injury affecting her memory of the ordeal & her kidnapper still at large. She‘s asked for her help in ⬇️

DebinHawaii ...the sheriff‘s investigation into the murder of a local woman & things get a little dicey. Good plot & twists & I like the dual mysteries of Beth‘s abductor & the local murder & the fact that many of the citizens of Benedict, Alaska are hiding, running or distancing themselves from their pasts. Looking forward to diving into book 2. #series Book 2 is (edited) 3y

Tonight‘s dinner is a poke bowl with my two standbys, Hawaiian Style Ahi & California Roll with brown rice & seaweed to wrap it up in.

I took the 2nd book in this mystery series as an #ARC for review & since I can‘t stand to not read a series in order, I got this 1st book as a library e-book. I do love books set in Alaska.🧊❄️ 💙

So excited for this ARC from Paige Shelton!! It's not a cozy, which is a bit of departure, but it sounds REALLY good, and I can't wait to dive in!
