The Midwife of Venice
The Midwife of Venice | Roberta Rich
2 posts | 11 read | 4 to read
Not since Anna Diamants The Red Tent or Geraldine Brookss People of the Book has a novel transported readers so intimately into the complex lives of women centuries ago or so richly into a story of intrigue that transcends the boundaries of history. A lavishly detailed (Elle Canada) debut that masterfully captures sixteenth-century Venice against a dramatic and poetic tale of suspense. Hannah Levi is renowned throughout Venice for her gift at coaxing reluctant babies from their mothers using her secret birthing spoons. When a count implores her to attend his dying wife and save their unborn son, she is torn. A Papal edict forbids Jews from rendering medical treatment to Christians, but his payment is enough to ransom her husband Isaac, who has been captured at sea. Can she refuse her duty to a woman who is suffering? Hannahs choice entangles her in a treacherous family rivalry that endangers the child and threatens her voyage to Malta, where Isaac, believing her dead in the plague, is preparing to buy his passage to a new life. Told with exceptional skill, The Midwife of Venice brings to life a time and a place cloaked in fascination and mystery and introduces a captivating new talent in historical fiction.

Book Outlet's Black Friday sale always gets me! This is the half of the order that was for me. The other half was gifts which I already put away. I won't get to them anytime soon but buying books always gives me that warm fuzzy feeling🤗. #bookoutlet #bookoutlethaul #bookhaul

#17BookLove #SetinaBelovedLocation Many moons ago my hubby and I honeymooned in the South of France 🇫🇷 and Italy 🇮🇹Italy, especially Venice, instantly became our favorite and most cherished vacation destination. The Midwife of Venice did a good job of describing the haunting and romantic city with its winding canals and cobblestone alleys. (Check out that huge flower 🌺 clip in my hair and my hubby's sort of mullet 😂😂😂)

DivineDiana Love this memory! 8y

Cinfhen Thank you so much @Reggie and @KarenUK My hubby doesn't like to be reminded that he's been married for more than half his life😂it is a somewhat scary thought😜 8y
DeborahSmall I have a friend from Castello Tesino, it's on the way to Treviso. So I started my travels with her. My husband and I have been together 16 years but only married last April. We've had lots of trips together and I've had a couple with my friends. Currently planning a trip with my friend in Tennessee! Venice, Verona, Milan and lake Garda. I haven't been to the south of Italy but I just love the north ❤️ 🇮🇹 8y
