12 posts | 13 read | 5 to read
A new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author John le Carr Set in London in 2018, Agent Running in the Field follows a twenty-six year old solitary figure who, in a desperate attempt to resist the new political turbulence swirling around him, makes connections that will take him down a very dangerous path. In his plot and characterization le Carr is as thrilling as ever and in the way he writes about our times he proves himself, once again, to be the greatest chronicler of our age.

Another masterclass in the spy procedural by le Carré. I have genuinely loved every book he‘s written except “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” So very odd.

This one, however, restored my faith and enjoyment of John le Carré‘s writing. Was very interesting to see how the Brits viewed Trump even in the midst of their own ultra conservative party enjoying a renaissance at the same time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Let‘s read another John le Carré spy novel.

If it hadn't been a library group choice, I'd have bailed half way through.
I found it tedious, full of two dimensional characters and convoluted. I'd been looking forward to a new genre to delve into and am disappointed...
I think I'll be in the minority though 😐🙄

After a frustrating reread of a book for a group, I'm back on track.
This is for a library group. I've never read any by him, and it's not at all my usual genre...

Thoroughly enjoyable tale of espionage and bureaucracy interwoven with justifiably angry rants at very current political targets and some more subtle digs at less obvious ones. This was my #jolabokaswap gift from @Lizpixie Thanks again Liz, you made a great choice😘
Also #bookspin

gradcat I liked this book, too...he‘s still got it! 4y

Thank you so much Liz, I'm delighted with the book you selected and the chocolate looks beautiful (and in good condition🙂). Sorry again I didn't prevent you from taking the trouble to send it express post.

Lizpixie I‘m glad it made it, considering the fire situation. I hope you like the chocolate, it‘s from a small artisan chocolatier at the base of the Blue Mountains. They roast their own cacao beans & make everything from scratch.🍫 4y
MaleficentBookDragon @Lizpixie That sounds amazing! 4y

This is yet another excellent, well written LeCarré novel. At 89 years old, he may not write with the complexity and intricacy of his earlier books, but he‘s definitely still able to spin an enjoyable yarn. Because this book is told from the first-person point-of-view, there is an immediacy for the reader that drew me in at once. Spies don‘t like to be put out to pasture, and Nat (MC) abhors the idea. This leads him to agree to oversee a nearly ⬇️

The beauty of Nat lies in his ability to seduce and turn foreigners (like a pas de deux). What makes for an exciting plot is what happens when Nat becomes the object of someone else‘s seduction, albeit one where ⬇️ (edited) 4y
gradcat ⬆️ (cont) both parties are unaware of it. Brexit, Trump and Putin are just of few of LeCarré‘s targets, and he is utterly caustic here . . . and I loved that! ♥️ (edited) 4y

BarbaraBB Great review. Can you believe I only read one LeCarré in my life yet? (edited) 4y
gradcat @Cinfhen Oopsy! My bad!! That would be #PoliticalIntrigue . . . So sorry!! Thank you very much for your kind words, Cindy! Omigod! I left everything off, didn‘t I? And I can‘t fit it into the main text. This was #Autumn #PoliticalIntrigue . . . again, sorry for my lack of detail here! ♥️ (edited) 4y
gradcat @BarbaraBB I think you might really like his work. Some of it might seem dated because we have such different problems now, not really the Cold War anymore (although sometimes I think it‘s heating up!). The early ones can get very intricate, and by that I mean confusing...you really have to keep focus, which, let‘s face it, as I get older, that seems to get more difficult! 😂 4y
Cinfhen No worries!! Eventually we would have figured out which prompt it fit 😊but asking is so much easier!!!! 4y

If you love politics as much as I do, run, don‘t walk to your book supplier, and grab this novel. Espionage sure, it‘s vintage le Carré, but there‘s so much more: Brexit, Trump, Putin, Russian spies (or are they?) and, of course, the Queen‘s service.

I love this short novel, hooting and rooting for Nat and Pru. When I turn 89, I want to be le Carré.

CarolynM I've seen some good things about this one. I think I need to read it. 4y

John le Carré's latest makes me think of adjectives such as light, crisp, and clear -- for a spy story, this is as stripped-down as it gets. I read this through in an afternoon and almost thought it ended TOO quickly, but in fact it ends at exactly the right point.
