Niagara Falls, 1915 When Bess Heath returns to her family home near the picturesque falls, it is to an unfamiliar scene - the elegance of the life she once knew has vanished. Her father is a broken man, jobless and losing hope, and her mother is struggling to keep the family afloat. Isabel, the lively, charismatic sister Bess has always relied on is almost unrecognisable. Her engagement called off, she languishes in her bedroom, brooding and refusing to eat. Through all of this Bess finds solace in Tom Cole, a man she met by chance the night she returned home. Constant, gentle and devoted to Bess, he understands better than anyone the awesome and potentially devastating power of the falls - and consoles her through a tragedy that nearly ruins her. But as their lives become more fully entwined, Bess is forced to make a painful choice between what she wants and what is best for her family . . .

What a great book! I didn't know alot of the history surrounding Niagara Falls and this book successfully weaves that history into a love story around two complex and interesting characters. Although fiction, the story includes actual happenings at the falls and is inspired by an actual person, William "red" Hill. If you enjoy historical fiction, I highly recommend.

I loved this historical set at Niagara Falls. My claim to fame - when it was a Barnes & Noble Recommends Selection, my blurb was on the poster and fliers. I still have the poster hanging in my garage. Note: I did not move my car. 😁#Augustgrrrl #waterfalls

Lindy I award you high bookish cred points for that! 🏆 7y

Not worth the effort. The pov and tense didn't help much. Skip if you can.

#uniquefact Although I've lived my whole life very close to Niagara Falls, I never did any of the touristy things until recently. I highly recommend Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds #Augustphotochallenge

Suzze When I was in my 20s I rode the Maid of the Mist all night until it closed down, then went to a bar with a member of the crew. LOL 8y
Suzze Oh, and when this book came out, I was one of the readers for Barnes & Noble Recommends and my blurb was on all the signage for the book. I still have the giant window sign in my garage. I'll have to take a picture and post it one day. 8y
