This was a slow burn in story and world building. It truly made me miss Captive Prince because I felt like got sucked into that story quicker. That being said, I loved the villain here and discovered the big reveal well before it was shown. It was still interesting and a fun read, and was heading toward a 3 star rating… but that last line?? 👌

I am excited for the second one.

It usually happens that as I read my LGBTQ reads these next two months, I consistently add to the pile (two new additions in the background, and two LGBTQ manga on the way), but I‘m a third of the way through Dark Rise and I bought myself a new mug. Inaugural coffee and sitting down for a Sunday chill session.

It took me a while to truly get involved with this book, but when I did, it was pretty engaging. It spoke really strongly of Susan Cooper‘s Dark is Rising sequence to me, with that Old World magic, Dark-against-Light battle. It built its own mythology, though, with plenty of suspense and a wrenching twist at the end. The characters are vibrant, and even the dislikeable ones really live on the page. I‘ll def pick up the next book.

Switching out books today — my cold-addled head cannot handle the utter chaos of Black Leopard and am hoping for a more grabby read…

I really enjoyed this YA fantasy. It takes place in an alternative 19th century London. Will works on the docks while hiding from the men who murdered his mother. He ends up hiding out with the Stewards, a group of super strong people who will do anything to make sure the Dark King never rises again.

Great characters and action, with hints of romance and quite the amazing and frustrating ending. Out 9/28.

Peri and I are cozied up on the couch and I'm starting this YA fantasy ARC. I absolutely adored this author's Captive Prince trilogy (adult fantasy), so very excited for this one.

You know how sometimes you finish a book & are giddy with excitement, mind racing at the possibilities & otherwise basking in the glow of a story well told? Well, Pacat‘s YA debut, a fantasy set in early 19th c. London, is every bit as entertaining as I expected it to be. I am very interested to see where Pacat takes the story in the next book. Really, I can‘t wait! A super fun read with an interesting premise & great characters. On sale 9/28/21.
