Fierce Bad Rabbits
Fierce Bad Rabbits: The Tales Behind Children's Picture Books | Clare Pollard
3 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
What is The Tiger Who Came to Tea really about? What has Meg and Mog got to do with Polish embroidery? Why is death in picture books so often represented by being eaten? Fierce Bad Rabbits takes us on an eye-opening journey on a pea-green boat through the history of picture books. From Edward Lear through to Julia Donaldson, Clare Pollard shines a light on some of our best-loved childhood stories and what they really mean, weaving in tales from her own childhood and her re-readings as a parent. Because the best picture books are far more complex than they seem - and darker too. Monsters can gobble up children and go unnoticed, power is not always used wisely, and the wild things are closer than you think. Sparkling with wit, magic and nostalgia, Fierce Bad Rabbits will make you see even stories you've read a hundred times afresh.

This book should be read by everyone who loved reading as a young child, and any parents who love reading to their children today. Nostalgic at the core, the interpretations of children's picture books throughout the ages is a delight.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. I was immediately seized by the cover design and wasn't disappointed. Too often children's picture books are overlooked because of their young audience, but in Fierce Bad Rabbits, Clare Pollard analyses them with the respect and tenderness deserving of the tales that shape us.

@LibrarianRyan have you seen this book? It was well-reviewed in The Times on Saturday. The book is subtitled ‘The Tales Behind Children‘s Picture Books‘. I think it may be UK-focused rather than US, but I couldn‘t not bring it to your attention....

I don‘t know who else is doing your children‘s book challenge but they may like it too....

LibrarianRyan No but I will be looking into it. It may even work in my library. 5y
