Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford | Clint Hill, Lisa McCubbin
16 posts | 21 read | 24 to read
Retired Secret Service agent Clint Hill brings history to life with this rare and fascinating portrait of the American presidency. Hill delivers a stunning perspective from the eyes of an everyman who saw some of the most historic moments of the 20th century during his seventeen years protecting the most powerful office in the nation. Hill walked alongside Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford, seeing them through a long, tumultuous era: the Cold War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy; the Vietnam War; Watergate and the resignations of Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon. With a unique insider's perspective and a moving touch, Hill sheds new light on the character and personality of these five presidents, revealing their humanity in the face of grave decisions.--Adapted from dust jacket.

If you love history, memoirs, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into powerful lives, Clint Hill's Five Presidents is a must-read—or in my case, a must-listen! As a former Secret Service agent, Hill's experiences with presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford are recounted with extraordinary detail. Hill's perspective offers a mix of reverence, heartbreak, and raw honesty. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❤️📚

Attitudes in this house are raging. It may be time to find a hiding spot and get lost in my book.

My current spot is in renovation, at the moment.

Clint Hill performed an incredible service for our country and he has done an excellent job detailing it in this book. He brought five presidents to life, giving us a perspective unknown by many. I will never think of Eisenhower, President or Mrs. Kennedy, Johnson, or VP Agnew the same way again. I listened on audiobook and the narration was fantastic.

Suet624 I agree. This was a really interesting book. 5y

First of all, I‘m a huge nerd when it comes to anything Kennedy-related.

Not only does Clint Hill discuss that tragic day with JFK when he jumps onto the back of his car, but we hear about all five presidents Hill swore to serve and protect.

He delivers his stories with lots of heart, detail, and even some humor. I appreciated his bluntness and honesty.

Worth reading indeed.

JenReadsAlot I read another book by him that I really enjoyed. 6y
KristenDuck @JenReadsAlot he‘s such a good person 6y
Theshadedbuffalo I LOVED this one too! So, there is another one by him, called Mrs. Kennedy and Me, and it describes his time in a lot more detail with the Kennedy‘s. I was in tears in some parts, and the story is amazing. ❤️❤️ 6y
KristenDuck @Theshadedbuffalo Clint hill really stood by those Kennedy‘s. I love that about him. 6y

Interesting look inside Secret Service coverage of the president and how it (and the world) has changed since the 50s. Mr Hill has also written books about the Kennedy Assassination and his time protecting Jackie Kennedy.

I am getting history geeky now. Does anyone have a recommendation about well-written biographies on Robert and/or Ethel Kennedy. And also Lady Bird? My thirst to know more.

bookishkai And also, for an interesting look at the non-political dynamics of the Kennedy family, check out Patrick Kennedy's book 8y
Belles @bookishkris thank you for those recs. I'm going to Half-Price Books today. Maybe I can find those. 8y

Directions on how to not stab oneself in the face: pet your kitty and read about the Steady Eddy secret service who serve and protect through all the drama. It's been a good tonic for me. #allisnotlost

Reviewsbylola I just finished his book about Mrs Kennedy and really enjoyed it. 8y

I thought this might be a good read post inauguration as the Secret Service is a neutral perspective anyway. Clint Hill worked for 3 republicans and 2 democrats.

The full title of this book is Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. He‘s right. It is extraordinary. He's almost like Forest Gump. Hill seems to have been involved in every major event. He was the agent assigned for years to Jacqueline Kennedy and was on the Kennedy detail when the President was shot. I was sorry to read about the guilt he felt for decades over Kennedy‘s death.

Look what made it's way into my Kindle, thank you auto-download from my local library!! I've had this on reserve for awhile and I cannot wait to dig into it. I read Clint Hill's "Mrs. Kennedy & Me" and wow...the last few chapters made me cry big, ugly, all-the-feels tears. Really looking forward to this read because I love Presidential history!!!
