The Abortion
The Abortion | Richard Brautigan
7 posts | 13 read | 21 to read
A reclusive young man works in a San Francisco library for unpublishable books. Life's losers, an astonishing number of whom seem to be writers, can bring their manuscripts to the library, where they will be welcomed, registered and shelved. They will not be read, but they will be cherished. In comes Vida, with her manuscript. Her book is about her gorgeous body in which she feels uncomfortable. The librarian makes her feel comfortable, and together they live in the back of the library until a trip to Tijuana changes them in ways neither of them had ever expected.

A tremendous book by one of my favorite authors of all time.

This book is only partially about an abortion that the romantic partner had, but there is also a lot of other stuff in there (I am actually personally pro-life, but that doesn't mean you can't read about it, because people have life experiences.)

Some very beautiful and extremely humorous stuff in here, as is the case with much Richard Brautigan.

I picked this one up at the library‘s book sale for 50 cents. I love Richard Brautigan. I‘d never heard of this one before. The description of the library at the beginning of the book is dreamy.

Bookish.SAM I love Brautigan!! Haven‘t read this one yet, but it‘s on my list 6y

TBT- One of my most beloved books. A library that is both the sweetest and the most heartbreaking thing in the world. An abortion. And love. Oh, and Brautigan's unmistakable prose. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
