A riveting, suspenseful, and exuberant novel from the bestselling, Man Booker Prize-winning author of The White Tiger and Selection Day about a young illegal immigrant who must decide whether to report crucial information about a murder--and thereby risk deportation. Danny--formerly Dhananjaya Rajaratnam--is an illegal immigrant in Sydney, Australia, denied refugee status after he fled from Sri Lanka. Working as a cleaner, living out of a grocery storeroom, for three years he's been trying to create a new identity for himself. And now, with his beloved vegan girlfriend, Sonja, with his hidden accent and highlights in his hair, he is as close as he has ever come to living a normal life. But then one morning, Danny learns a female client of his has been murdered. The deed was done with a knife, at a creek he'd been to with her before; and a jacket was left at the scene, which he believes belongs to another of his clients--a doctor with whom Danny knows the woman was having an affair. Suddenly Danny is confronted with a choice: Come forward with his knowledge about the crime and risk being deported? Or say nothing, and let justice go undone? Over the course of this day, evaluating the weight of his past, his dreams for the future, and the unpredictable, often absurd reality of living invisibly and undocumented, he must wrestle with his conscience and decide if a person without rights still has responsibilities. Propulsive, insightful, and full of Aravind Adiga's signature wit and magic, Amnesty is both a timeless moral struggle and a universal story with particular urgency today.

Bailedbailed

Annoying myself here. I‘m bailing on this, at least for the time being.

It‘s a great premise. Danny overstays his Visa in Australia, & is living/working as ‘an illegal‘. His status affects everything- including whether to the police when one of his former cleaning clients is murdered.

I may try again in print one day- I‘d like to know how the story plays out. But I‘m not hooked enough to deal with another 6 hours of Danny‘s musings on audio.

squirrelbrain Ah well, you can‘t love them all! 4y
rockpools @squirrelbrain Exactly. It was fine - just not for me right now. 4y

One of the clients Danny previously cleaned house for has been murdered and he is thinks he knows who killed her. The problem? He is an undocumented immigrant in Sydney and the possible murderer knows it. This is a great exploration of the realities of daily life for an undocumented person woven through with a cat and mouse game. And the ending is perfect. Really good and certainly topical.

Tamra Really intriguing! 5y
Cinfhen This was clever! I think it‘s perfect for bookclub 5y

Different from any other book I've read, as it was like living inside someone else's head for a day. Taking place in Sydney, Danny is having an internal debate over whether to call into a hotline with information on a recent murder. He worries that doing so will get him deported.

This story opens your eyes to the struggle of living in constant worry, always looking over your shoulder, waiting for your whole life to be pulled out from under you.

“If someone is denied rights, do they still maintain responsibilities?”
A clever #satire written by Booker winner Aravind Adiga. Danny enters Australia on a student visa only to discover his university is a scam. Choosing to stay in the country without attending school is considered illegal & if caught he will face deportation. Danny, honest & hardworking becomes a house cleaner constantly staying one step ahead of the legal system.👇🏽

Cinfhen When he becomes privy to information regarding a murder he must decide to stay quiet (which keeps him safe) or report a crime (which jeopardizes his status). Great for bookclub discussion. #JennyIs30 5y
Cinfhen It‘s a slim story but most is an internal dialogue that might grate on some readers nerves. I‘m glad it wasn‘t longer and even I drew tired of Danny‘s musings near the end. 5y

Another #ARC available for publication next week. I‘m at the 33% mark. The premise is excellent but so far the execution is missing the mark. Danny, an “illegal” from SriLanka is living in Sydney, he thinks he has crucial information regarding a murder. But by coming forward he will leave the safety of “invisibility” and risk being deported. What to do?

I will start by saying that this is an extremely well written story. With all the talk of books and the immigrant stories, I beg you try this one. However there is one caveat, this is not the American immigrant story, this memorable story takes place in Australia where they have some of the more stricter immigration laws.
