I attended my first Keith Ryall Memorial Jousting Tournament this weekend - while Sir Philip (current Jousting World Champion) ultimately won the tournament (and his horse, Valiant is my favourite) - these two were my favourite to watch Lady Renae (white) & Lady Liberty (green).

It was a typically chilly Ballarat weekend - with less rain than expected - which I appreciated!

tpixie Amazing!!! That would be so fun to watch with my grandkids! The flight over from Kansas, USA with them, though, seems daunting ( 7 yo, 4 yo, 3 yo x2, 2 yo & 7 months). Lol and pricey! Hmm… 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @tpixie, it‘s a long flight from 🇺🇸 to 🇦🇺 for sure! This could be just as fun and much closer? https://www.kcrenfest.com 11mo
LeeRHarry I wondered from your last post if this was at Kryal Castle 😊 11mo

Lizpixie Awesome! We missed this years Medieval Festival at Nurrangingy Reserve. I love watching the jousting, the horses are wonderful. Plus the melee, love that too. Hubby wants to join next years one. Does your one have a banquet too? 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, this particular one didn‘t have a banquet but there was one in the summer time that did. Mostly the jousting tournaments at Kryal aren‘t attached to a festival. Here‘s a bit of background if you are interested: https://www.visitballarat.com.au/stories/faces-ballarat-phillip-leitch/ 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, have you ever been to the St Ives Medieval Faire? 11mo
Lizpixie Not yet but we‘ve always wanted to go! We‘ve been to the Nurrangingy one, the one at the Hawkesbury Showgrounds & Lithgow‘s Ironfest. We love dressing up, hubs makes a great Viking! 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, that sounds amazing - how cool that you‘ve got so many options! 11mo

Lizpixie Iron feat at Lithgow. This one‘s more of an arts/steampunk feel as well as jousting etc. https://ironfest.net/ 11mo
tpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Oh my yes!!! Crazy I forgot about that! Loved found there as a child! Thanks 😊 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, thanks for the links 🖤 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @tpixie - glad to help! Would love to see a photo if you end up going 🖤 11mo

Getting through the working week by thinking about going to see the jousting on the weekend.

It‘ll be my first time attending the Keith Ryall Memorial Jousting Tournament!

julesG That looks like a lot of fun. It's Wednesday, so you don't have too long to go. 12mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG - it‘s been a WEEK tho 😫 thank goodness I‘m past the halfway point. 12mo
CarolynM Oh no! We were in Ballarat a week too early☹️ I need to plan better! Enjoy the tournament. 12mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, oh no! Next time? 🤞🏼 12mo

Also really enjoyed the 14th century knight foot tournament- which basically involved people challenging each other to bouts with different sticks (this one was long swords - my favourite was the dagger fight & one that I forget the name of which was like a stick with a knob of the end which they furiously poked each other with until someone yielded)

Doing this on a 28°C/83°F day in armour is hardcore!

ravenlee Mace? Morning star? 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I really can‘t recall what the herald said. I think it‘s the 4th one from the left. Definitely not a mace or morning star as there were no spikes or anything dangling off a chain. 1y

Lady Renae Marisma was my favourite jouster of the day.

She rode Goldie - I don‘t think I‘ve seen either before but I hope to!

CarolynM We had a great time watching jousting on TV a few Christmases ago. We said we‘d go to a tournament one day but we‘ve not got there yet. Looks like we‘ve missed out for another year☹️ I love the title of the tagged book, by the way😏 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM - ooh - I‘ll let you know next time I‘m going for a tournament. It‘s a lot of waiting for the jousting to start - so you can potentially get a lot of reading done too! 1y
CarolynM Win-win!😆 1y

Me telling a work colleague my weekend plans : “like I‘m not a horse girl but Valiant is the best horse”

Woo - finally made it back out to Kryal Castle after entirely too long (cheers covid related travel restrictions) - got to see the jousting! It was a slightly different tournament than I‘ve experienced before but still good!

Pictured : Sir Philip Leitch (Australia‘s only full time Knight & jouster) and his noble horse, Valiant

I patted this one!

My favourite horse on the field (they‘re all magnificent tho!). His name is Valiant 😍

CarolynM I saw some jousting on TV a couple of Christmases ago - what great fun it is to watch! 5y

Spending the weekend in rainy Ballarat to see Australia take on England in a jousting tournament at Kryal Castle... for some ashes or something super original 😂

Literally sat out in the rain to do this and 10/10 will be repeating the process tomorrow! I‘m hopefully that it will either not rain (unlikely) or that the swimming board that I bought to sit on will be more waterproof than what I used today 😂😂

LeeRHarry Still haven‘t made it out to Kryal Castle - today looks like a better day for it, enjoy! 5y
CarolynM Wish I'd known this was on! 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeeRHarry, Sunday was much better! It‘s good fun, watching the jousting ☺️ I‘d love to go to an all out renaissance faire at some point tho... 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, it‘ll be on again! Or something similar ☺️ I recommend picking a tournament day - it‘s so cool watching the horses come prancing out in their knights colours while the herald does the introductions - and the jousting itself 🤔☺️ 5y
