Cakewalk | Rita Mae Brown
7 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Continuing in the exuberant tradition of "Six of One, Bingo," and "Loose Lips," "New York Times" bestselling author Rita Mae Brown returns to her much-loved fictional hamlet of Runnymede, whose memorable citizens are welcoming both the end of the Great War and the beginning of a new era. The night a riot breaks out at the Capitol Theater movie house during a Mary Pickford picture, no less you can bet that the Hunsenmeir sisters, Louise and Julia, are nearby. Known locally as Wheezie and Juts, the inimitable, irrepressible, distinctly freethinking sisters and their delightful circle of friends are coming of age in a shifting world and are determined to understand their place in it. Across town, the well-to-do Chalfonte siblings are preparing for the upcoming wedding of brother Curtis. But for youngest sister Celeste, the celebration brings about a change she never expected and a lesson about love she ll not soon forget. Set against the backdrop of America emerging from World War I, "Cakewalk "is an outrageous and affecting novel about a small town where ideas of sin and virtue, love and sex, men and women, politics and religion, can be as divided as the Mason-Dixon Line that runs right through it and where there s no problem that can t be cured by a good yarn and an even better scotch. With her signature Southern voice, Rita Mae Brown deftly weaves generations of family stories into a spirited patchwork quilt of not-so-simple but joyously rich life. Praise for Rita Mae Brown s Runnymede novels "Six of One" Joyous, passionate and funny. "The Washington Post Book World" No matter how quirky or devilish, Brown s people cavort in an atmosphere of tenderness. . . . It is refreshing to encounter this celebration of human energy. "Chicago Sun-Times" "Bingo" "" Genuinely funny. " Los Angeles Times" "" Vividly drawn characters . . . and tart, loving humor. " Self" "" "Loose Lips" "" Surprises . . . come from Rita Mae Brown s comic timing and her affection for eccentrics. " The Seattle Times" "" [Brown] does an admirable job of portraying the effects World War II has on one small American town. " The Arizona Republic""

Mehso-so

Picked up this book solely because the cover was so cute. I‘m a little over 100 pages in and I‘m hoping the book gets better and the cover won‘t be the only good thing about this book.

Kinda cool when you start reading a new book and it starts off talking about your small state.

1. Probably equally split between print and Kindle. I don‘t buy very many books so it depends a lot on the format the library has or if there‘s a Kindle deal.
2. US 7 or 7.5
3. I never ever make it but...steak fries and homemade ranch dressing...😋😋
4. I rewatched the whole of The Sopranos not too long ago, which was very satisfying for some reason. But we don‘t have cable or regular TV so not many reruns.
5. 👍

SilversReviews I like the library for print and audio. I hve been reading more e-books lately. 7y
AlaMich @SilversReviews I‘ve been using Libby for audiobooks and a little for ebooks. It‘s so user-friendly. 7y

I'm so nervous about this galley! Her book Six of One is one of my faves, and this is in the same series. But RMB has become SO curmudgeonly (and libertarian) over the years that I'm almost peeking between my fingers to read this. 🙈 #pleasedontruinthisworld #galleybrag #sortof

BookishFeminist 😒 Someone needs to tell her about Litsy. Friends from all generations on here so I don't see how technology hurts communication! 8y
Chessa So agree. Just, why?! This is such a fucking boring argument to put in an intro. Ugh. 8y
ginarae3 People thought the same thing about the telephone. Probably about letter writing. Ugh. Technology is your friend! Communication is good! 8y
