Martin Eden (Revised)
Martin Eden (Revised) | Jack London
The semiautobiographical Martin Eden is the most vital and original character Jack London ever created.Set in San Francisco, this is the story of Martin Eden, and impoverished seaman who pursues, obsessively and aggressively, dreams of education and literary fame. London, dissatisfied with the rewards of his own success, intended "Martin Eden" as an attack on individualism and a criticism of ambition; however, much of its status as a classic has been conferred by admirers of its ambitious protagonist. Andrew Sinclair's wide-ranging introduction discusses the conflict between London's support of socialism and his powerful self-will. Sinclair also explores the parallels and divergences between the life of Martin Eden and that of his creator, focusing on London's mental depressions and how they affected his depiction of Eden.

I‘ve read this before, but I didn‘t remember it and wanted to revisit it. I liked the beginning well enough as Martin is discovering new things, but I enjoyed it less as the story went on. I want Martin to find something real in what he‘s searching for, and instead he‘s never satisfied leading to a tragic ending.

A tragic success story, underlining the struggle of the classes and the futility of wealth.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

Storywise, I loved this (except the end), as a reminder that you can't write for fame because fame is ultimately meaningless. There were lots of slow parts, and "dialogue" was really a collection of monologues or recaps of scenes, but overall, I enjoyed this.

"Hack-work and income first, masterpieces afterwards." Looks like the #writerslife hasn't changed all that much since 1909.

Culture and collars had gone together, to him, and he had been deceived into believing that college educations and mastery were the same things.
