Music For Torching
Music For Torching | A.M. Homes
4 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 8 to read
Paul and Elaine have two boys and a beautiful home, yet they find themselves thoroughly, inexplicably stuck. Obsessed with 'making things good again', they spin the quiet terrors of family life into a fantastical frenzy that careens well and truly out of control. As A. M. Homes's incendiary novel unfolds, the Kodacolor hues of the American good life become nearly hallucinogenic: from a strange and hilarious encounter on the floor of the pantry with a Stepford Wife neighbour, to a house-cleaning team in space suits, to a hostage situation at the school, Homes lays bare the foundations of marriage and family life and creates characters outrageously flawed, deeply human and entirely believable.

(Day 2 - #Music)

*Wacky AND dark? Well, yes, A. M. Homes manages that in this book, which is pretty dead on for the prompt. But you can also listen to the album with the same name by Billie Holiday . . . and to quote Oprah, “O! That‘s good!” ♥️

Cinfhen I‘m intrigued on both fronts!!! Thanks for the recommendations 🙏🏼 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen Honestly, from what I know of you, I think you really would enjoy both of them. That‘s assuming you‘re a Billie Holiday fan. ♥️ 5y
Billypar Very excited to read more Homes after trying May We Be Forgiven. This one sounds great! 5y
gradcat I love her books, and her book reviews. @Billypar I hope you like this one! 5y

(Day 15 - #Foundations)

*This prompt made me think of A. M. Homes‘ book “Music for Torching,” because it documents the disintegration of the foundations of family and family life. Published in 2009, Homes pulls no punches in her unrelenting sabotage of life in upper middle-class, bourgeois neighborhoods. All of the scenes pictured above take place in Homes‘ scathing dismantling of American suburban values and beliefs.

kspenmoll Sounds fascinating! 5y
gradcat @kspenmoll I really liked it...not sure the critics thought it was one of her best, though...I hope you like it if you get around to reading it. 5y
Cinfhen Sounds really good but I wonder if now 10 years later it would feel dated🤷‍♀️ 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen Perhaps, especially if you consider that Cheever covered a lot of this ground, 75 years ago, ad nauseam. 😂 (edited) 5y

Pickpick

This book is like a train wreck... a dumpster fire...

If you have triggers - be warned. In fact you better pass.

It is hard to say anything about this book with out giving away spoilers.

100 pages in and holy hell this is a strange ride so far. And we haven‘t even gotten to most of the events listed in the plot summary on the back cover!
