Songs I listened to recently

“Simply put, Bach could authentically express sadness without being sad.” This chapter on why certain music hits us in the brain vs. hits us in the heart is a great start to the book. It‘s also been fun to find the songs and artists online and listen as the authors mention them. #music

Our local symphony recently had Jeffrey Biegel as a guest performer. They performed Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. It was a fantastic, dynamic, invigorating performance. This is Jeffrey Biegel with the Brown University Orchestra playing a similar arrangement.

TieDyeDude That must have been a good show. I'm not familiar with Biegel, but this is a fun arrangement. Thanks for sharing! 2d

I listened and I loved her voice - there was something purely comforting about it (perhaps because she‘s from the PNW?). Her childhood is heartbreaking. Her mother? Yikes. I‘m not familiar with her music, and I got confused by when she was coming out with albums (I didn‘t follow the timeline very well once she was in BC). But I don‘t think I would have stuck with it if I was reading it myself. Something didn‘t attach.

It was Dylan Drakes who put this on my radar. And when Drakes writes that those teenagers really act like teenagers, he's right. So if you're not up to this, maybe save it for another time. But it's exactly that what makes those characters so real, so believable, so true. I mean, how did we act when we were 18? So yes, I was so proud of them while watching them grow and shine.
I may have also started to listen to some Mariachi songs.

Sace Did you say mariachi? 6d

A risky move for me, a mood reader, to try to choose 10 books I‘ll definitely read by the end of the year. As Beth Orton would say (in the spirit of number 9 on my list), “can‘t pin this butterfly down.” Yet, here we are!

1. All Fours
2. The Rachel Incident
3. Wild Dark Shore
4. Rapture
5. Mina‘s Matchbox
6. Small Things Like These
7. Normal Rules Don‘t Apply: Stories
8. Lost Evangeline
9. We Oughta Know OR Pretend We‘re Dead
10. On Mysticism

monalyisha The first two books are my IRL book club selections for November & December, so I‘ll almost definitely get to those. 😉 6d
ChaoticMissAdventures Great list!! All Fours is so decisive but I enjoyed it. I have The Rachel Incident waiting on my TBR! 6d

vivastory I received Wild Dark etc in my botm and am really looking forward to it 6d
JamieArc The Keegan book is a good one to read in December. I wish I had read it for Jolabokaflod. You can read it in a day. I‘m curious what you will think of All Fours. 6d
monalyisha @JamieArc Yes! I‘ve been waiting for the Keegan! I‘ve read two others by her and I‘ve loved them both, so I‘m eager to pick up her most popular. 🌲 6d
monalyisha @JamieArc And I‘m nervous to find out what I think of All Fours…and even more nervous to find out what the rest of my book club will think of it because I picked it for us! 😜 6d
JuniperWilde I wish I could read Keegan and All Fours for the first time. Both are favourites of mine. 6d
KT1432 I‘m another big fan of Small Things. It‘s so short I‘m due for a reread. 6d
JamieArc @monalyisha Like it or not, it‘s probably a good book club choice! 6d
monalyisha @JamieArc At the very least, right? We‘re reading it VERY close to the time when we vote on next year‘s books. I hope there aren‘t too many of them who hate it enough to view my proposed titles for next year with suspicion. 😅 6d
monalyisha @JuniperWilde That‘s encouraging! ✨ 6d
BarbaraBB So many good ones among those ten books. Enjoy! 5d
monalyisha @BarbaraBB Mina‘s Matchbox is definitely your doing! 5d
BarbaraBB I hope you‘ll like it. I did but not as much as I expected to! 5d
monalyisha @BarbaraBB It sounds right up my alley and, though I know they‘re very different stories, I loved The Memory Police. So, I‘m hopeful! 5d
BarbaraBB I loved that one too and the tagged one even more. She definitely can write! 5d
BennettBookworm Wild Dark Shore!! Yaaaasssss 5d
TheKidUpstairs I'm very intrigued to see what you think about All Fours, it's VERY Marmite. I loved it, but many did not. And I loved The Rachel Incident ❤️ 💕 ♥️ 4d
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs I voted against The Rachel Incident when we were choosing our books for the year…but I was outvoted. The fact that you enjoyed it is bringing me some hope! 4d

Another great book by Angie Thomas. Thomas does an amazing job with creating complex characters who are dealing with real life issues. I also loved the character dynamics.
