An indictment of the way we view entertainment as “content“ in general, but especially and specifically Spotify. I'd suggest Glenn McDonald's You Have Not Yet Heard Your Favourite Song had been written specifically to try to counteract it, if that hadn't come out first. Pelly's more conscientious about sources and ensuring what she writes is true and not just vibes, which gives her credibility.

I loved this book primarily because I love Marina Abramovic. It tells the true story of Marina‘s art, so singular & intriguing, focusing on her time sitting at MOMA for months staring into people‘s eyes & the long lines of people waiting for the opportunity to sit before her. It covers a wide range of her events. I appreciated hearing about her parents. Through it all there is the fictional story being told of several attendees of the MOMA event.

BarbaraBB I never knew this book is about Marina. I love her art so much! Stacking! 1d
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I didn‘t realize it either until @Jas16 sent it to me. You‘ll like it. 24h
CarolynM I liked this one more than I expected to. I thought some of it was a bit pretentious but lots of it was really good. I think you‘ll like it too @BarbaraBB 11h

Suet624 @CarolynM Pretentious? I‘m curious about that. 7h
CarolynM I can't remember the details and I don't have a copy of the book any more, so I can't give you chapter and verse, but I think it was that some of the discussion about the significance of the artwork was a bit much for my taste. I felt like the writer was trying too hard with some of the descriptions. 7h
Suet624 @CarolynM interesting. I can see how the character of Levin and his music might have felt that way. I‘m so in awe of Marina that I may not have seen the sections on her as pretentious. I just find her courageous and one of a kind. 7h

I really liked Beautyland and the Book Riot podcast folks love this one, so I figured I‘d give it a try. I made it almost halfway through but I just don‘t care. It isn‘t grabbing me at all. So, on to the next.

My favorite Manilow song, too. 💔

I found this an interesting exploration of Canadian music in the 1990s, feminism, and personal reflexivity. I read the 2024 edition with a foreword by Vivek Shraya.
