This book spent way too long insulting its readers and not enough time presenting interesting science. I wonder who it‘s for? The author seems to be convinced that everyone who would read it is deeply stupid and she‘s talking about a statistician who says he‘s unpopular at weddings cause he brings up the statistic that 50% of marriages end in divorce. As if that didn‘t just make him rude and dull.

I‘m cleaning up the bottom of my Goodreads Want to Read shelf in preparation for the #Booked2020 #bottomofTBR prompt. Some of the books I added years ago are panned almost universally, with hilariously funny reviews. This is one of those books.

The one review on Litsy is also 👎 for terrible writing, so off the list it goes!

Vulture took a poll of book critics and posted an extremely thoughtful article: "A Premature Attempt at the 21st Century Canon." Whip smart, argumentative, and dialogue inducing.

http://www.vulture.com/article/best-books-21st-century-so-far.html

Billypar What a great article! I'm always concerned that when the shortcomings of our current literary canon are discussed that some people conclude, 'why even have a canon at all?' But as long as we don't misinterpret it as a 'greatest ever' list, I feel like it's so important to have some common ground as readers, (beyond just the books we studied in high school), to encourage dialogue about these works and their significance. 6y

Interesting science interspersed with irritating narrative. I could barely focus on the interesting because the irritating was so, well, irritating.
