The Floating City
The Floating City | Pamela Ball
2 posts | 6 to read
In a hot Honolulu morning in 1895, a dead man washes up on a beach. Eva Hanson-fortune-teller, itinerant, a woman who has left her own troubled past behind-takes up the mystery of this body in a tale that takes us deeply into the turbulent politics of the Hawaiian Islands at their turning point. In poetic, luminous prose, Pamela Ball reveals a history that has been almost entirely hidden, both in recent fiction and in the history books: of the time when first the American missionaries, then the sugar fields, and finally the United States army transformed this landscape forever. Encompassing the experiences both of a rebellious, passionate woman and of the imprisoned Queen Lili'uoakalani whose fortune she foretold, The Floating Cityis a small masterpiece of depth and originality.

Day 9 #JuneBookBugs #floating From my #TBR stack. I picked this novel with 'floating' in the title up at the library book store several months ago. It's historical fiction, set in 1895 Honolulu during the fall of the Hawaiian Monarchy. Actually, reading the description again makes me want to move it up closer to the top of the pile. So many books, so little time! 😬📚📚📚📚

I did vow to cut down on book buying until I purge a bit of what I have, but I did take a quick look at the library bookstore today while dropping a box of donations off & I snagged these 3 for $2. Akata Witch is a #blameitonlitsy, The Floating City about 1895 Honolulu & First Impressions is a mystery/romance set in a bookstore & says it's a "homage" to Jane Austen... so how could I resist?! ?❤️ #usedbooks
