This book perfectly evokes the final few years of island life on St Kilda, in the Outer Hebrides. It really captures the bleak and haunting beauty of this landscape and captures the disappearing way of life. Set from the 1920s to 1940s, it‘s the love story of local girl Chrissie and Cambridge undergraduate Fred; they fall in love but fate keeps intervening to keep them apart.

“The Lost Lights of St Kilda” is a tale of love, hope and culture that I‘m sad to say that wasn‘t really my cup of tea. This is a beautifully written book and I‘m sure it is one that will be adored by many, but for me it was slow moving and that took away from my overall enjoyment. I‘m rating this one 2 stars.

This was a very touching wartime love story.
Chrissie and Fred fall in love while Fred is working on her home island of St. Kilda
But with him serving in the war and ending up behind enemy lines in a prison camp and Chrissie and her family evacuating the island of St. Kilda the pair lose touch but their love lingers on.
Fred isn't even aware he has a daughter.
Unable to forget that summer Fred desperately tries to find his way back to Chrissie.
