pickAny other Littens feed the birds? The weather turned cold yesterday, and I have had a cardinal population explosion!! Loads of House Sparrows always, too. Anyway, I highly recommend field guides by the author of the tagged book. He hasn't written them for every state, but they are available for several. Both bird and wildflower guides are sorted by color, making them easy to reference. Full color photo on one side, and reference info - including⬇️
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) commonly confused species (i.e. the house sparrow page talks about small differences to tell them apart from tree sparrows and chipping sparrows). Limiting it by state means it's much more likely that I'll find the bird I'm looking for than in some of the broader field guides (like Eastern US). I also track my birds for Project Feeder Watch - super fun!! 4y
AmyG I did when I lived in NJ. Ioved doing this. And yes, it‘s so much fun to see what birds come. I had my “regulars” but every once in a while saw someone different. I saw a goldfinchonce and was thrilled. In CO I am going to get a hummingbird feeder, so I am excited for that. 4y
Soubhiville I used to until I got Sietje. As a 14 week old puppy she caught 2 finches and 2 bunnies 😢 so the feeders had to go. Now that we own a house again I may attempt a regular feeder and hummingbird feeder in the front yard, where murderdog can‘t get to them (outside fenced area). 4y

audraelizabeth My dad feeds and provides them with water and suet. He feeds lots more in the winter than summer. We have a bird book from the audobon society that was my great grandfathers in wonderful condition. My dads christmas from my grandma is suet and a trophy rock for the deer. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @AmyG - Yes, I love watching all the interactions of my regulars - House Sparrows flock, so I have upwards of 40 at a time sometimes, and they are quite noisy and obnoxious yet entertaining haha The cardinals get very sassy - also found out they mate for life, which is why I usually see them in pairs. Every year I plan to put up a hummingbird feeder and never seem to get around to it!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville - Ohno!! Our area is fenced to keep the dogs out of the garden, but Waylon does get aggravated at the birds and frequently tries to herd them out of the yard by barking at them until they fly to the shrubs... then the tree... then away haha It's sad when pets catch wild animals, but it's hard to fault them for doing what comes naturally. What kind of dog is Sietje? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @audraelizabeth - yes, they definitely eat more here when the weather gets cold! And when everything is frozen, they come to our little fish pond/waterfall a lot more as well. The little brown/black feeder to the left is my suet feeder - it can only be accessed if the birds are hanging upside-down (like woodpeckers). Otherwise the starlings just sit there and gulp it all down in about 5 seconds! The Audubon guide sounds beautiful!! 4y
audraelizabeth We dont have starlings thankfully but sometimes bluejays. 4y

TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView - oh yes, I've heard that you shouldn't feed the birds places where bears are likely to appear! We don't have that problem here, although black bears are making a comeback in southern Ohio, and one was sighted in our county last year! 4y
UwannaPublishme Your cardinals are gorgeous. I love feeding the birds and have a giant bird feeder and also a squirrel-proof one. I definitely need to read more about the birds in my area. 🦅 4y
