Pickpick

Finished reading, highlighting, and annotating. Fascinating! What is most interesting to me are the everyday details of life that are not mentioned in other historical writing about WWII. For instance: ration books for candy. This book, first published in book form in 1971, is a compilation of "letters from London" first serialized in the New Yorker throughout WWII, and has been republished by Persephone books, UK. Well worth a read, historians!

#MayBookFlowers Day 20 - War

I posted yesterday about one of Mollie Panter-Downes' short story collection, focusing on British life immediately after WW2. Today, I'm featuring a 450 page #persephone collection of her non-fiction/journalism writing, for The New Yorker, during WW2.

For #recommendsday, let's talk about Persephone Books. They publish mostly overlooked titles by ladies from the last 100 or so years and each book looks like this with different end papers. They are so stunning and I'd recommend checking them out.

Reviewsbylola I love Persephone! My sister lives in London and offered to bring me home any titles I want. I am so jealous that she has been to the actual shop! 8y
Jessicav @Reviewsbylola I know! I was in England last year and they weren't the easiest to find. We hit every single book store in every city just to find those. (I ended up carting home 30 books, 3 Persephone, so obviously I found others...) Ordering online is the easiest but super expensive to ship. 8y
Gezemice Did not know about Persephone books, I am intrigued! Thanks for the recommendation! 8y
