I am saddened to have discovered this author post mortem, but I did get to enjoy the whole series in one shot. Sad to be left hanging. Sad that there will be no more of this superb historical research and novelization. 😭I really enjoyed this series, which I happened upon in a used book store! The triumphs and the woes of a bibliophile! 📚📚📚

Ugh. What desperate people. What a detestable man. Just all of them! 🛳🍷🍾🥃🥃🥃🥃⛷🐃👩‍👦📚🙄

ShariEstaLeando Goodreads: You just finished reading the Paris Wife. Here are some things you might like to do next? Me: Drink yourself into a stupor? Go on a ski vacation and pretend everything is perfect? Lie silently while your husbands mistress climbs naked into bed with the two of you? Shoot yourself in the head? Seriously, what a detestable bunch of self centered twats. I never want to read anything about any one of them again. 5y

The blurb on the jacket cover says this book “will become required reading in schools and universities across the country.” Yes, I can see that happening. It‘s important. Bravo, Tommy Orange!

Sadly read these mostly out of order, and this is the last one I have to read. Discovered “The Dying Detective” first, in a Little Free Library and I was hooked!

Excellent and very detailed; pretty much a straightforward recording of life in South London during WWII. The more learn, the less I find I know, and the more I want to find out. Another great one from Persephone Books, and the last of this summer‘s acquisitions.

Sparklemn I read this a few years ago. I loved it. Another great discovery from #persephone! 4y

As profound a pair of books as one could ever hope to read. “Happiness” is fiction, and explores the idea of trauma becoming transformational. “The Body Keeps the Score” is Non-fiction, and explores ramifications and methods of healing.

Meh. As an historian, I was eager to read this because we would consider this a primary source document, but...nothing new here. Sanctimonious, superficial, and an attempt to apologize for the election debacle. Disappointing and unimpressive, and not particularly well written, so here‘s a photo of my shoes, instead.

I‘ve been working in education with refugees for my entire adult career, over 30 years and I don‘t plan on stopping. Thank you, Helen Thorpe, for getting it right, for loving our kids & their families, for seeing them, for listening to their stories, for working to understand, for appreciating why we do what we do. Thank you for bringing our beautiful, brilliant, tenacious, courageous students into the public eye. ❤️

This one was hard to get into, as the writing style is “experimental”, and I found it hard to understand the context at first. I almost gave up and put it down, but I persevered and I‘m glad I did! Moving and thought-provoking.

Quite possibly the worst book I have ever finished. Trite, simplistic, contrived. A pathetic waste of paper. Was it supposed to be satire? It was ridiculous, but far from funny.

I certainly learned a lot. This was easy to pick up and put down. It wasn‘t especially a compelling read, but it was interesting. I could have done without the author‘s descriptions of her own first hand experiences with some aspects of the book. It was enough for me to know how some things were done rather than reliving her firsthand experiences as well. I also would have appreciated translations of some of the period writing.

I think what Ann Patchett‘s novels have in common is perhaps the complex lives of her characters. Bel Canto is my favorite-where is my copy?-but the stories are all unforgettable, and I never could have imagined the turns each one has taken. I certainly enjoyed this one as well.

I almost didn‘t read this, because the title seemed disrespectful & I‘m not crazy about Whites writing about Native people. It‘s set in 1932, so the voice of the era is good, and I did feel like the book was written respectfully. I enjoyed it.
