A Widow's Story
A Widow's Story: A Memoir | Joyce Carol Oates
7 posts | 6 read | 11 to read
Unlike anything Joyce Carol Oates has written before, A Widows Story is the universally acclaimed authors poignant, intimate memoir about the unexpected death of Raymond Smith, her husband of forty-six years, and its wrenching, surprising aftermath. A recent recipient of National Book Critics Circle Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award, Oates, whose novels (Blonde, The Gravediggers Daughter, Little Bird of Heaven, etc.) rank among the very finest in contemporary American fiction, offers an achingly personal story of love and loss. A Widows Story is a literary memoir on a par with The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion and Calvin Trillins About Alice.

Seeking recommendations! Do you know any good books about grief? 😬 My friend (75)‘s husband has died - they did everything together & she‘s feeling lost. She‘s looking for a non-fiction that will reassure her that it gets better. She read The Year of Magical Thinking but found it too magical. I thought this sounded good. She loved Our Souls At Night (fiction-wise). Thank you in advance, Littens! 🙏🏼

ClairesReads Oh Our Souls at Night 😢😢😢❤️❤️❤️ sorry for your friend- this one is good. 5y
BarbaraBB I can only think of fiction but I loved 5y

Bookstore browsing. I bought Joyce Carol Oates‘ memoir about her husband who was brought to the hospital for pneumonia and ended up dying one week later. I have such dark taste haha 🤷🏼‍♀️. Such a great shop of used books!

A Widow's Story: A Memoir | Joyce Carol Oates

There is an hour, a minute - you will remember it forever - when you know instinctively on the basis of the most inconsequential evidence, that something is wrong. You don't know - can't know - that it is the first of a series of "wrongful" events that will culminate in the utter devastation of your life as you have known it.
