A unique take on WWII historical fiction-Eve Dawson and Audrey Clarkson: Eve‘s mother is lady‘s maid to Audrey‘s mother. Despite their opposite lives, they become fast friends united against Hitler‘s invasion of England. Characterizations have depth with a dual timeline scenario, with a few twists.

Lynn Austin‘s historical christian fiction set during WWII follows 2 women from opposite English caste system. Eve and Audrey were childhood friends, separated by class as teens and reunited during war. Their frienship survived Hitler, death, the Women‘s army, bombings and missile dangers. Yet following the war was their greatest struggle when Eve escapes England with Audrey‘s papers and begins a new life in America posing as Audrey.

I have mixed feelings about this. It‘s the story of 2 friends who live through WWII together in England, and the ups & downs of their friendship together. There are flashbacks & flash forwards. Pros: I enjoy learning more about the Blitz & the different things different people had to go through during the war. Cons: too long — it really dragged in some places & got repetitive; also, the constant religious symbolism rang false to me. It got very ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Heavy-handed towards the end especially. And I say this as a Christian and someone with a similar background to these girls! The end was also wrapped up much too neatly. Real life doesn‘t work that way. I would only recommend this to those who have enjoyed her previous work or if you want to learn more about the Blitz. 3⭐️ (edited) 4y
