The Courage Consort
The Courage Consort | Michel Faber
7 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
With his elegant prose and perceptive imagination, the bestselling author of The Crimson Petal and the White creates a unique, self-contained world, where the perennial human drama plays out in all its passion and ambiguity. In these acclaimed novellas, Michel Faber takes on the interior world of inventively crafted characters. "The Courage Consort" tells of an a capella vocal ensemble sequestered in a Belgian chateau to rehearse a monstrously complicated new piece. But competing artistic temperaments and sexual needs create as much discordance as the avant-garde music. In "The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps," a lonely woman joins an archaeological dig at Whitby Abbey and unearths a mystery involving a long-hidden murder. In "The Fahrenheit Twins," strange children, identical in all but gender and left alone at the icy zenith of the world by their anthropologist parents, create their own ritual civilization.

Mehso-so

This is an interesting novella told from the point of view of a woman with depression who travels with her vocal ensemble to a château on the continent for a major rehearsal. Faber's writing is great as always, but some parts of the story felt unfinished.

Although it might look like a nice little novella, The Courage Consort is definitely a short story. On repeat reads I think it could be very rewarding, and there were enough interesting points to warrant going back to explore. Also it is light enough to balance on a cat! Final #booktourism for the day. The 199 steps. Couldn't find that story here, so tagged the one it is paired with in my copy. I really like Michel Faber's work - every book is so different. You couldn't imagine that the person who wrote 'the crimson petal and the white' also wrote 'under the skin'. Met him once at a talk, but was too star struck to hold a conversation.

IamIamIam I'm on the guest author committee at my son's school & I told the most recent author, Dan Yaccarino, that I got totally derpy when I met Carl Hiaasen and all I could say was, "You're awesome!" He laughed and said that's usually enough for most authors anyway. Lol 7y

quirkyreader @britt_brooke I don't watch that much T.V. So the time goes towards reading and the ever growing TBR. 7y

My latest morning read in the car. I am excited about this one. And I wonder how did my currently reading pile turned into five books?

There was a good article about Michel Faber on the guardian book page today. This photo has an extra special bonus, my webbed feet. Makes me glad to be a "child" of Dagon.?
