The Coconut Children
The Coconut Children | Vivian Pham
4 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Life in a troubled neighbourhood demands too much too young. But Sonny wouldn’t really know. Watching the world from her bedroom window, she exists only in second-hand romance novels and falls for any fast-food employee who happens to spare her a glance. Everything changes with the return of Vince, a boy who became a legend after he was hauled away in handcuffs at fourteen. Sonny and Vince used to be childhood friends. But with all that happened in-between, childhood seems so long ago. It will take two years of juvie, an inebriated grandmother and a porn stash for them to meet again. The Coconut Children is an urgent, moving and wise debut from a young and gifted storyteller.

Ive been very indecisive since the new year and I cannot commit to any one book. I'm constantly fluttering from book to book.this past week.
That being said, I found myself beginning 2 totally new books today. Both excellent so far I might add.

rachaich I sometimes have to do that too. 😊 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Thanks @rachaich , that's good to know. I think I'm feeling very excited about all of the new reading possibilities for this new year and I can't settle on just one. The buffet is just too large! 4y

I‘m struck by a sense of awe/wonder – I‘m also thrilled for the novels yet to come! Pham is only 19 but her debut novel heralds the arrival of one to watch! Her prose is captivating. Her varied characters are finely drawn! She focuses on the minutiae of lives to draw vivid and bold images of lives broken and futures deeply hoped for. Whether capturing the observations, fears, hopes of children, teenagers or adults Pham is careful/unflinching.
