Seven Endless Forests | April Genevieve Tucholke
3 posts | 5 read
In Seven Endless Forests, the gorgeous standalone companion to the critically acclaimed fantasy The Boneless Mercies, April Genevieve Tucholke spins a bold and blood-hungry retelling of the King Arthur legend that is perfect for fans of Naomi Novik, Garth Nix, and Laini Taylor. On the heels of a devastating plague, Torvis sister, Morgunn is stolen from the family farm by Uther, a flame-loving Fremish wolf-priest who leads a pack of ragged, starving girls. Torvi leaves the only home shes ever known, and joins a shaven-skulled druid and a band of roaming Elsh artists known as the Butcher Bards. They set out on a quest to rescue Torvis sister, and find a mythical sword. On their travels, Torvi and her companions will encounter magical night wilds and mystical Drakes who trade in young men. They will sing rowdy Elshland ballads in a tree-town tavern, and find a mysterious black tower in an Endless Forest. They will fight alongside famous Vorseland archers and barter with Fremish wizards. They will feast with rogue Jade Fell children in a Skal Mountain cave, and seek the help of a Pig Witch. They will face wild, dangerous magic that leads to love, joy, tragedy, and death. Torvi sets out to rescue a sister, but she may find its merely the first step toward a life that is grander and more glorious than anything she could have imagined.

A nice, refreshing read after the horrible book I last finished. Torvi has lost almost everyone she cares about. Her mother and her friends died from the snow sickness. So when Torvi‘s sister, Morgunn is kidnapped by wolf-priests, Torvi has to get her back. With the help of Gyda, a Druid, and two Butcher Bards, she sets out on a quest to get her back. My one note is that some things were taken out of real life with one letter changed. 4⭐️

Four books I‘ve read over the past week. All good. All very different. All June 🇦🇺 releases (we hope. Many are being delayed). #junerso2020 #fantasy #retelling #growth

Books like this one just aren‘t written anymore. We‘ve grown so accustomed to thick plots with lots of twists and turns that it‘s rare to find a book that just tells a story. It reads much like Lord of the Rings or Skyrim. No big gestures, no flowery language. Just an honest bard‘s tale being told for your interpretation. Two of my fave quotes: “Fortune favors brave women” and “It‘s no easy thing to meet your dreams head-on.”
