I really really really enjoy her writing.
1. Anything Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Colston Whitehead, Sharon G. Flake ... so many fantastic authors of color
2. Louise Erdrich and Sherman Alexie (still angry at him for being an awful human)

I‘d never read any poetry by Nikki Giovanni before, but found my way to her work via a mention by poet Fatima Asghar. My favorite poems and essays were the ones where she wrote about her family and what life was like growing up. The way she writes about the simple pleasures in life feel like home.
I‘ll preface this by saying it‘s not my favorite Nikki Giovanni collection, but it‘s Nikki Giovanni and she‘s one of my favorite poets. This collection of poetry and short verse has some gems sprinkled throughout, a lot of which is inspired by her love of family and food.

I went on a poetry bender at the library today.
AND my bundle of poetry zines came in from Damaged Goods Press, so it‘s a very thematic, exciting evening here.

I read her anthology last year, The 100* Best African American Poems, last year and enjoyed her writing style. Not a big poetry person, so the poems did little for me, but enjoyed the little prose pieces intermixed with them.
I don‘t read very much poetry anymore but Nikki Giovanni has been a favorite since high school. I didn‘t love everything in this collection but what I did love I loved hard. Perfect #24in28 palate cleansers.
I feel like I probably ought to have liked this book better but I just didn't connect with it. There was something about the tone which I liked, the ease of it, the familiar nature. Like sitting around my grandma's dining table. Familiar, comfortable. And some of the poems did hit me hard, like "Allowables." Mostly it wasn't to my taste, though.
Superbly talented. A little prose mixed with poetry. A range of subjects.
Love Nikki Giovanni!
Back to this. Im loving it. I'm going to try to finish it before I HAVE to get things done to head out for a couple nights.
I love Nikki Giovanni and I have a hard time passing up a deal.
This is such a good book! A collection of poems and small selections of memories. I loved every page!! #poetry #nikkigiovanni #read
Wow! This is a powerful quote on the wall of a BBQ shop in Toronto!
