#WickedWhispers Day 22: At the heart of the narrative is ten year old Karen Reyes, a comic book aficionado, lover of #monster(s) and all things gruesome, budding artist, and self-appointed private detective. This is a book that one should take time reading. It is hefty, fairly thick and detailed, and tears at one‘s insides. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-jkn

ElizaMarie I love this! I have Book 2 that I haven't been able to start because I wanted to provide more time to it. 1mo

“Dear notebook - I‘ll tell it to you straight- in my opinion the best horror magazine covers are the ones where the lady‘s boobs aren‘t spilling out as she‘s getting attacked by a monster. Those covers give me something worse than the creeps. I think the boob covers send a secret message that it is very dangerous to have breasts. - and considering what Mama is going through, maybe the magazines know stuff that we don‘t…”

This was spectacular. The art is exceptional, and the story compelling and layered. I can gush all day about how rich the reading experience was. I can‘t wait to get the next volume from the library.

Even though other reading should take priority, I‘ve been mesmerized this morning by the art and story in this volume. It is so compelling that, even though I‘m only a quarter way through, I‘ve put in a hold on the newly released second volume at the library. Based on what I‘ve read so far and reviews I‘ve seen, I have a feeling that this may end up being a highlight of my reading year.

lil1inblue This was such an incredible graphic novel! I still need to get to the second volume. 3mo

My second time reading this masterpiece. Stunning art and story. This is one of the best books I've ever read. As Alison Bechdel says: "A baroque mystery whose plot pulls you forward as insistently as the images demand you linger." Presented as the graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, growing up poor in 60s Chicago, as she investigates her upstairs' neighbour's possible murder, connected to her youth in Nazi Germany. Vol 2 is out in May!!

snapsnarlgrowl I‘m so excited we‘re finally getting volume 2! 8mo

This is, um, the most ambitious, artful, amazing, etc...graphic novel that I have read. Ferris's artwork is just astounding. I definitely just lost myself in it at times.
As far as the narrative, there are several storylines woven through. Some are stronger than others, all incredibly emotionally intense, please be advised of trigger warnings bc this will hit you.
The second (and final) volume releases next year and I'm so anxious to finish this!

AmyG I, too, can‘t wait for the new book. Stunning illustrations. I loved it. 11mo

The art in this graphic novel is unlike anything I‘ve ever seen. The narrator is a young girl with a complex life. There are a lot of storylines up in the air, but this is part one of a (I‘m guessing) 2-part series. (GoodReads said May of 2023 for part 2,but we will see.) I was really invested in everything that was happening. Seriously though, if I could, I would hang this artwork in my home. Stunning.

vivastory I loved this one. I'm skeptical on the release date of vol 2, it's been pushed back for years now 2y
AshleyHoss820 @vivastory We can be cautiously optimistic, but it doesn‘t look likely. It‘s a rock and a hard place: you want to be supportive of the artist and their time, but you also really want to know the story! ☺️ 2y
BarbaraBB I still need to read this one. It‘s on my shelves! 2y
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB There is a lot going on, and I would have been disappointed if I didn‘t know this was a part one situation. ☺️ I was just so spellbound by the art! Hopefully they release part 2 soon and I can have some answers. 😂 I hope you enjoy it too!! 2y

I like the art, but I'll need to read the second book to really know how I feel about the plot... I found some part quite lengthy. For the moment, I'm on the fence...

I don‘t think there is anything I can say about this book that hasn‘t already been said. It‘s every bit as good as I‘ve always heard. The artwork is gorgeous & complex, the story full of twists and turns, and the narrator a truly wonderful, surprising character. This book exemplifies what makes graphic novels such an immersive, compelling, & emotionally powerfully medium for telling stories. Highly recommended.
