This was spectacular. The art is exceptional, and the story compelling and layered. I can gush all day about how rich the reading experience was. I can‘t wait to get the next volume from the library.

Even though other reading should take priority, I‘ve been mesmerized this morning by the art and story in this volume. It is so compelling that, even though I‘m only a quarter way through, I‘ve put in a hold on the newly released second volume at the library. Based on what I‘ve read so far and reviews I‘ve seen, I have a feeling that this may end up being a highlight of my reading year.
So excited for this re-read before the long anticipated book two 🤗
My second time reading this masterpiece. Stunning art and story. This is one of the best books I've ever read. As Alison Bechdel says: "A baroque mystery whose plot pulls you forward as insistently as the images demand you linger." Presented as the graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, growing up poor in 60s Chicago, as she investigates her upstairs' neighbour's possible murder, connected to her youth in Nazi Germany. Vol 2 is out in May!!
Rereading the first volume of this comic in anticipation of the second volume that I just got in the mail!
This is, um, the most ambitious, artful, amazing, etc...graphic novel that I have read. Ferris's artwork is just astounding. I definitely just lost myself in it at times.
As far as the narrative, there are several storylines woven through. Some are stronger than others, all incredibly emotionally intense, please be advised of trigger warnings bc this will hit you.
The second (and final) volume releases next year and I'm so anxious to finish this!
The art in this graphic novel is unlike anything I‘ve ever seen. The narrator is a young girl with a complex life. There are a lot of storylines up in the air, but this is part one of a (I‘m guessing) 2-part series. (GoodReads said May of 2023 for part 2,but we will see.) I was really invested in everything that was happening. Seriously though, if I could, I would hang this artwork in my home. Stunning.
I like the art, but I'll need to read the second book to really know how I feel about the plot... I found some part quite lengthy. For the moment, I'm on the fence...
My daughter wanted to read some graphic novels so I sent her off with these…
I don‘t think there is anything I can say about this book that hasn‘t already been said. It‘s every bit as good as I‘ve always heard. The artwork is gorgeous & complex, the story full of twists and turns, and the narrator a truly wonderful, surprising character. This book exemplifies what makes graphic novels such an immersive, compelling, & emotionally powerfully medium for telling stories. Highly recommended.
